Notes for: Mary Bodine

There are a bunch of Lakes buried in the Musconetcong Valley Cemetery in Hunterdon Co., NJ. One couple is Joseph P. Lake (1813-1899) and his wife Mary Smith (1815-1891). It's possible that they could be this family. Maybe "Smith" is a mistake.

In Ira K. Morris's Memorial History of Staten Island, NY (v. 1), he says John married Catherine Britton, the sister of Nathaniel Britton. The following also comes from that book. It is talking about John and Catherine. It is more than a little confusing, but here it is word for word: Their sons were John (usually recognized in local history as "Squire John"), Jacob (the father of William H. J. and Edmund Bodine), the late Captain John, James, Jacob, Albert, and Vincent. There were three daughters, who removed from the Island. James was the father of the late Abraham Bodine, of Mariners' Harbor, and of several sons and daughters now dead.

Note from Dave: I have no idea why this appears to say that John and Catherine had two sons named John and two sons named Jacob. The article makes no mention, it seems, of their sons Nathaniel, Abraham, and Edmund. There could be mistakes in my data here or mistakes in the article.

Mary appears on page 20 of the Britton genealogy. She was born March 20, 1779 and died on Feb. 19, 1839 at the age of 58 years, 10 months, and 20 days. That would make her birth date to be Mar 30, 1780. That does not match up with the above date.

Hello,

I found your site and was amazed at the time and effort you have put into the family research. My husband's family is descended from Mary Bodine/Joseph Lake. In fact, I have a copy of Elmer Garfield Van Name's booklet on the descendants of Joseph Lake; I see that you referenced his "Britton Genealogy Early generation from Somersetshire, England to Staten Island, NY." I will have to contact the historical society and see if I can get a copy of that, too.

... If you would like any information on the Joseph Lake/Mary Bodine descendants, please let me know. Thank you for your time and consideration.
