Notes for: Nathaniel Bodine

Nathaniel did have children. See "Richmond County Administrations," Book I (not 1), page 78. This could be the Nathaniel Bodine listed on the 1820 Census of Richmond County, New York. There was one male under 10 and one between 25 and 44. There were also 3 females under 10 and one 25-44. He was located in Northfield. And his occupation may have had something to do with manufacturing. I later found his kids listed at FamilySearch.com. They are all listed as "of Castleton, Richmond Co., NY."

The Britton genealogy says Nathaniel and Maria were married at the Moravian Church.

Wayne (WayneLII at aol.com) said this about Nathaniel's mother, Catherine Britton:

I think that Catharine's mother was Mary Fountain. I found the baptism for Catharine and it has her birth as April 6, 1757. The church was St. Andrew's Church in Richmond, Staten Island ("Staten Island Church Records," by Tobias Wright, p. 247): born April 6, 1757 - parents Nathaniel Brittain & wife- child-Katharine. She had a brother, Richard: (p. 255): born March 22, 1766 - parents Nathaniel Brittain & Mary his wife- child-Richard.

One of their children died on March 10, 1826, but the first name was not given or legible in the church records.

Just his name is listed on his death record, but I'm assuming it must be this Nathaniel Bodine.

There is a Nathaniel Bodine on a list of jurors for the town of Northfield in Richmond County, New York made in the year 1828. This may have been some kind of headline in a newspaper "Richmond County Jurors 1828." Some other names on the list were Van Name, Post, Decker, Cruser, Crocheron, Garretson, and Mersereau. Nathaniel was listed as a "yeoman." I think this was a certain class of farmer.

A Stephen Wood of Northfield (Staten Island) was appointed guardian of Mary E., Harriet, and Albert Z. Bodine, the minor children of Nathaniel and Maria Wood and grandchildren of John Bodine, on August 27, 1836 (Guardian Book 1, p. 284). I'm not sure where the name "Wood" comes from, but this must apply to this family.

In Ira K. Morris's Memorial History of Staten Island, NY (v. 1), he says John married Catherine Britton, the sister of Nathaniel Britton. The following also comes from that book. It is talking about John and Catherine. It is more than a little confusing, but here it is word for word: Their sons were John (usually recognized in local history as "Squire John"), Jacob (the father of William H. J. and Edmund Bodine), the late Captain John, James, Jacob, Albert, and Vincent. There were three daughters, who removed from the Island. James was the father of the late Abraham Bodine, of Mariners' Harbor, and of several sons and daughters now dead.

Note from Dave: I have no idea why this appears to say that John and Catherine had two sons named John and two sons named Jacob. The article makes no mention, it seems, of their sons Nathaniel, Abraham, and Edmund. There could be mistakes in my data here or mistakes in the article.

The obituary of his son Albert Z. Bodine says that Nathaniel, Albert's father, died young, leaving a widow and four children who came west in 1841 and settled 18 miles north of Chicago.
