Notes for: Joseph Bodine

This information comes from the 1850 and 1860 Censuses of Bordentown Township in Burlington County, New Jersey (roll 443, p. 138 and roll 685, p. 748).

There was also a woman named "Matilda" living with the family at the time of the 1860 Census. Her last name was not listed which means it might have been Bodine. She could therefore be Joseph's sister.

From Ronny Bodine:

There is no direct evidence that Joseph Bodine was the son of Thomas Bodine. However, in 1830, Thomas Bodine's household included 2 boys aged 5-9, one of whom was his son James. This Joseph may be the other son, being the namesake of Thomas's father. By 1840, he was 18 or 19 and no longer living with his parents. In 1850, Joseph Bodine, age 29, a carpenter, was living with his family in Bordentown, Burlington County. His household included Catharine McCue, 21, who would be Eleanor's sister. Joseph Bodine was a member of the Bordentown Common Council 1855-1856. At the births of his children Edward in 1858 and Ellen in 1863, his occupation was noted as hotel proprietor. In 1860, the family lived in Bordentown where Joseph reported his occupation as a carpenter, By 1870, the family had relocated to New Brunswick, Middlesex County where Joseph Bordine was now a hotel keeper. Joseph and Ellen Bodine still lived in New Brunswick in 1880. Joseph Bodine, aged over 60, was recorded in the 1895 New Jersey State Census as a resident of New Brunswick. In 1910, Joseph Bodine, age 88 and Eleanor Bodine, age 89, lived with their widowed daughter, Emily Colman in Montclair. Joseph reported that in 58 years of marriage the couple had had 8 children of whom 5 were then living.

Bodine, another residuary legatee, also a brother of Samuel P. Bodine, decd, Joseph Bodine and Ellen, his wife, the father and mother of Samuel P. Bodine, decd., Humphrey A.
