Notes for: Moses Bodine / Budine
Terrence K. May, at his WorldConnect site, said that New York is the preferred birthplace for Moses despite the 1860 Census entries. The Budine family is split between entries on two successive pages. Scotland is shown for a family immediately preceeding the Budines. Ditto marks finish out the page. On the next page, the remainder of the Budines are shown as born in NY. This must just be a mistake. The 1850 Census records all of them as having been born in NY.
I'm not sure how this Moses is known to be a son of Jacob and Elizabeth, but it does seem likely.
Terrence K. May, at his WorldConnect site, says, "Relationship with Moses Budine is based on 1830 Delaware NY FederalCensus... All were shown as foreign born, not naturalized. If accurate, this would place their immigration to America between1820 and 1825.
In the 1810 Census of Delaware Co., NY, Jacob and Elizabeth Budine did had three males under 10 years old. I will consider Moses one of those for now.
The 1820 Delaware Co., NY Federal Census shows Jacob residing in Middletown, heading a household with 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 18-26, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45 and1 female 50-60. This census record shows all of them naturalized (info from Terrence K. May's web stie at WorldConnect).
Based on the 1820 Census of Middletown, NY, either Moses or the third male I have listed was born about 1810.
The 1830 Delaware Co., NY Federal Census shows Jacob heading a household with 1 male 10-15, 1male 15-20, 1male 50-60, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20 and 1 female 50-60. All were shown as foreign born, not naturalized. If accurate, this would place their immigration to America between1820 and 1825 (info from Terrence K. May's web stie at WorldConnect).
In the 1880 Census of Hancock, Delaware Co., NY, there is a Moses (73), Alvira (44), Edd (19), and John Bodine (40) in one house. In the 1900 Census of Hancock, Alvira is listed as John's stepmother. Alvira must have married Moses, John's father, when she was relatively young as compared to Moses. Here we see the name going back and forth between Budine and Bodine. This would lend credence to the idea that the name Budine may have started out as Bodine.
I am not sure Eddie's mother was Catherin Weaver. She would have been pretty old by the time he was born (abt 53), but his mother does not appear to have been Alvira since Edward's mother is listed as born in NY in the 1880 Census of Hancock, Delaware Co., NY. In that same household is Alvina (sp?) who is listed as born in PA. Maybe Moses had another wife in between Catherine and Alvira. See my notes for Edward.
From Ronny Bodine:
Summary: Delaware County, New York was created 1797 from portions of Otsego and Ulster counties. Moses Budine is first recorded in the 1830 Delaware County census, but is reported to have been born in Delaware County in 1808 as per the 1855 New York State Census which recorded the exact counties of birth within New York. His eldest child, Stephen, was born 1829 in adjoining Broome County, as recorded in the 1855 census, so the family may have lived there for a time or Stephen's birth occurred simply on a visit to that neighboring county. Catherine Weaver was the daughter of Peter and Sarah Weaver. She died before 29 March 1865 on which day in Delaware County Moses Budine married Mrs. Alvina Robbins, apparently a widow, with a 4-year old son, Edward. In the 1865 New York census of Delaware County, Alvina Robbins was living with her son Edward Robbins and Edward appears as Edward Budine, age 10, in 1870 and Edwin Budine, age 14, in 1875 living with Moses and Alvina Budine.

Budine for the rest of the household.

1900 (21 June) Hancock, Delaware Co.: John BUDINE Oct 1839 NY widowed farmer, Alvina Sept 1836 PA step-mother widowed.
Living with her stepson John Budine 1900, Alvina was not living with him in 1905 and in the July 1913 newspaper obituary of Asa Budine does not name his stepmother, Alvina, as a survivor. One may presume then that Alvina died between June 1900 and 1 June 1905, the as of date for the 1905 NY census.
