Notes for: Joseph Smith Bodine
His birth year would match up with the fact that he was ten years old at the time of the 1860 Mercer County, New Jersey Census (roll 698, p. 58). In the Hunterdon County Democrat of July 5, 1881, his name is listed as Joseph S. Bodine. It says he died on June 30, 1881 at Orange, New Jersey in the 32nd year of his age. It also says he was the brother of Mr. J. P. Bodine "of this place."
He is listed as a "merchant tailor" in the 1880 Census of Orange, Essex Co., NJ. He is in the house of his father-in-law, Gottlieb Bodmer.
Ronny Bodine wrote this: The 1933 City Directory of Pasadena, California lists Helen Bodine, widow of Joseph, living with her son David and his wife. But none of the family is listed in the 1934 directory so it would appear the family had made their move to Idaho. If Helen Bodine had died in California her death would have been recorded there and it is not. But it also is not recorded in Idaho. It appears likely that Helen died on the journey between the two states.
From Ronny Bodine:
From The New Jersey Mirror (Mount Holly, N.J.) of 14 May 1874.
Married. BODINE--BODMER. On the 30th ultimo by Rev. J. Hankin, D.D., Joseph S. Bodine, of Philadelphia, and Helen Bodmer, of Bernardsville. [Note: This record does not specifically state the marriage occured in Mount Holly or Burlington County, but as there is no record of it in the Philadelphia marriages and their first child was born in New Jersey it seems likely it did occur there.]
From: Richard Higgins: A Resident and Pioneer Settler at Plymouth and Eastham, Massachusetts, and at Piscataway, New Jersey and His Descendants, by Mrs. Katharine Chapin Higgins, Worcester, Mass., 1918, p. 306-307.
Joseph Horner Bodme, b. June 20, 1850, d. June 30, 1881, resided at East Orange, N. J., married Helen Bodmer and had David Bodine and Helen Dorothea Bodine;
Note: The foregoing calls him Joseph Horner Bodme [sic] which must be in error, as with his last name, as all other records call him Joseph S. Bodine.
