Notes for: John Bodine
John Bodine remained in Fairfax County, Virginia when his father moved the rest of the family to Sevier County, Tennessee about 1818. On November 25, 1850 in Loudoun County, Virginia, John, at age 58, made an application for bounty land for his service in the company commanded by Captains Coffer and Cheek, in the 60th Regiment of the Virginia Militia, commanded by Col. Minor in the war with Great Britain. He enlisted at the Fairfax County, Virginia Courthouse on August 23, 1814. He was discharged December 20, 1814. Since this was for less than six months of service, he only received 40 acres of land. Congress passed an act in 1850 which allowed all veterans, widows or survivors to get 160 acres. His widow, Margaret Tillet Bodine, made an application April 12, 1855 from Loudoun County, Virginia, stating that she was 58 years of age and that her maiden name was Margaret Tillet. She said that she and John Bodine had married in 1815 and that her husband had died in 1854. On September 17, 1856, John Butler (probably a brother of Catherine Butler who had married James Bodine, a brother of John Bodine) gave an affidavit that he was acquainted with John and Margaret Bodine. He said that he had seen them the day before their marriage and that he was at his (John Bodine's) father's house when they returned from Georgetown after the marriage. He said that his father had given them a marriage feast at his house and that he had partaken of the marriage festivities. On September 3, 1856, William L. Lanham also signed an affidavit declaring he lived in the immediate area of John and Margaret Bodine since 1820. He said that John Bodine had died on the last day of January 1854, as upon reference to his book he finds his Cameron Parish charged with the making of his coffin and that John Bodine was buried February 1, 1854.
