Notes for: Nicholas Berdine, Sr.
Nicholas's name on the marriage record appears to have been "Bordine" and/or "Burdine" - #732; Nicholas BURDINE (BORDINE) of the County of Somerset... [bound to]... William FRANKLIN... Governor... 500 pounds... 19 Jan 1781.... Certificate of Marriage between Nicholas BURDINE... and Ann WEBSTER...[w] Rob. HUD
Tom Berdine (as of 1996) feels that this Nicholas could be the son of Levi Berdine and Rebecca Fox.
No absolutely certain record has been found of his wife, but something was found that says he had three children: two girls and a boy.
It is a theory that this Nicholas Berdine who married Ann Webster is the father of the Nicholas Berdine born in 1792, but I doubt that is true. It's based on the following:
There is a very old query sent in to the "Boston Transcript" dated 06Sep1934 and indexed in the American Genealogical-Biographical Index under "Berdine."
Quote: Berdine. I want parentage of Nicholas Berdine, born 1792 New Jersey, married secondly Sarah (Bartholomew) Baker, Jan 18, 1833, Cattaraugus County, NY died Aug 10, 1870, Hebron, Ind. Also name of his first wife by whom he had 8 children. Was he the son of Nicholas and Ann Webster, who married 1781 at Somerset County, New Jersey?
In the record, Nicholas' surname was spelled "Bordine."
From the Somerset County Historical Quarterly, v. VI, pp. 92-93:
John Piatt's "Cobbler's Census" 1765-1772. John Piatt was cobbler for the Three-Mile Run district of Somerset County. One of his account books covering 1765-1772 exists and from this has been constructed this list of families in the neighborhood in that early day. Nicholas Bordine. This could be this Nicholas Berdine.
And from v. 7, p 186, Early Recorded Wills in Somerset - from 1804:
1798, Dec 31. ......Recites that Frederick Van Liew, late of Middlebush, father of above-named parties, by his will dated Oct 24, 1796, devised lands to his seven sons and that they having made division of the premises, the parties of the first part conveyed to the parties of the second part 154.9 acres adjoining the Middlebush road, John Wickoff, Ran Garrison, Harmanis Cortelyou. Witnessed by Peter Vooorhees and Nicholas Bordine.

My thoughts on this is that Nicholas was about to file Bankruptsy and needed to disperse of his holdings. I have documents here verifying Nicholas’ Insolvency as of Nov. 1817, Charleston, Montgomery Co. Filed March 1818. One document shows that Nicholas has left the area or the state to avoid paying his debts. There are additional Mortgages Filed in Montgomery Co. I have not searched these as yet:
