Notes for: Nicholas Berdine, Jr.

This line seems to be pretty well researched from Nicholas Berdine, Jr. down. More proof of his direct ancestors is still needed. Some have said that this Nicholas Berdine, Jr. was the son of a Nicholas Berdine, Sr. but if that is true there would seem to be a generation missing between them. Here is some information from Karen Weller on this issue:

Nicholas Berdine was born on 24 December 1792 or 1793 in New Jersey, according to several entries on various genealogy websites. No source was given for the date or location of his birth, but these do agree with later census records. These entries state that Nicholas Berdine was the son of Nicholas Berdine and Ann Webster from New Brunswick, New Jersey, but it looks like he might have actually been their grandson instead of their son. Ann Webster was the second wife of the older Nicholas, married on 19 Jan. 1781. Nicholas and his first wife Dinah Van Liew had a son named Nicholas who was baptized on 1 Sept. 1776. Nicholas Bordine Jr. died on 21 May 1807 and was buried in the Van Liew Cemetery in North Brunswick, according to the History of Union and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey, 1882, page 753. Nicholas Bordine Sr. died in 1814. His name has been spelled several ways, including Bodine, Bordine, and Berdine.

Nicholas Bordine and Dinah Van Liew had another son, Jacob, baptized on 22 Jan. 1769. There is evidence that Jacob Bordine and his first wife Ann (Nancy) Farmer were the parents of the Nicholas Berdine born in 1792 in New Jersey. Jacob and Nancy moved their family to the town of Florida, Montgomery County, New York, in 1807, where their children were named in two mortgage records from 1816 and 1817. The baptisms of three of the children named in the mortgages have been found in the records of the First Reformed Church in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and another was found in the Dutch Reformed Church baptisms in Florida, New York. The baptism of Nicholas in 1792 has not been found yet. Unfortunately, the baptism records of the First Reformed Church in New Brunswick are not complete. Only four baptisms are listed for the year 1792, and all on the same day. Obviously many baptisms are missing from the records.

Jacob and Nancy’s children named in the mortgages were Nicholas, Peter F., Jasper, Samuel, Mariah, and Dinah Bordine. There may have been another son named Farmer Bordine, who went to Michigan later with Jacob’s children from his second marriage. The baptisms found so far are listed below. The first three baptisms were found in the Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society, new series, volume 13, pages 82, 228, and 348. The fourth baptism was found in the church records in the Historical Archives building in Fonda, Montgomery County, New York.

The son named Jasper, born in 1804, has also been said to be a son of Nicholas Berdine and Ann Webster from New Jersey. Jasper and his brother Nicholas were both in Cattaraugus County, New York, in 1830 and 1840. Jasper Berdine stayed in Cattaraugus County after Nicholas moved on to Illinois and Indiana. Jasper died in 1883. Their mother Nancy Farmer died about 1810 in Florida, New York. Jacob Bordine married his second wife, Christina Marlatt, about 1811. They moved to Genesee County, NY, in 1816, which became Orleans County in 1824. Jacob died in the town of Yates in 1836.

End of information from Karen Weller.

A lot of the information here came from WorldConnect from a David A. Blocher (dblocher52 at yahoo.com).

Thomas Berdine visited the Hebron Cemetery in October of 1995. He noted that all Berdines from Nicholas Berdine and forward (mostly) are buried here. The grave of Nicholas is a flat stone and very worn. The death date was not visible. Sarah is buried next to him in the far right corner of Hebron Cemetery.

He resided in Ellicontville, Cattaraugus, NY from at least 1825 to 1840 (census).

FTM CD #183 Early Settlers of New York State, 1760-1942, Volume 1, July 1936 Presbyterian Church at Good Will, Orange Co, NY: page 131 - query from "The Mail Box" - Please - Ancestry of Nicholas Berdine or Bodine and his first wife. Married in Cattaraugus Co, in 1833, secondly Mrs. Sarah Bartholomew Baker, the dau. of Rev. Justus Bartholomew, who settled in East Otto about 1820. Trying to compile a genealogy of descendants of William Dunlap or Dunlop, who settled in Cherry Valley about 1750. Correspondence invited. E. N. D. Washington

From the Obituary from Porter Country Vidette (Weekly), 25 August 1870 "Nicholas Berdine, at the residence of his son-in-law, A.K. Flint, near Hebron, Porter County, Indiana, Aug 10, 1870. The subject of this notice was born 1792 in the State of New York. From his native state, in 1840, he sought a home in the west, and, after spending three years in Illinois, made a permanent location in the neighborhood where he died. In the year 1812 he was married to Sarah Waterman, who died in 1822 (1832). Of eight children by his marriage, all, except two, are supposed to be living. Sara Baker became his second wife on January 18, 1833, and died in 1862, leaving four children. One of these lives in Wisconsin, the others reside in the vicinity of Hebron. He was not a member of any churcch, but died earnestly professing his confidence in the gospel. During the last few months of his life he thought much on the subject of religion, and was often engaged in prayer. When nearing the mystic Jordan he triumphed in the ---- of the grace of God was sufficient. At his funeral, the theme of discourse was: The Hope Inspired by Faith in Christ."

From the History of Porter County, pg. 753 "The father (Nicholas) devoted the major part of his active life to agricultural pursuits and both he and his wife ere residents of Indiana at the time of their death. Ther were folk of sterling character and fine mentality and their home was one in which high ideals were ever in evidence, they gave to their children the best possible educational advantages."

Birth year also annotated as 1783.

Thomas also found out that Nicholas's father was also named Nicholas and was a slave owner. He freed his slaves prior to the Emancipation Proclamation. He had two sons (Nicholas and ????). The family immigrated from Ireland.

The above information was entered by Thomas Berdine on December 1, 1995.

Mary Beth Sturdevant said she found land records for Nicholas and his brother, Jasper, in Cattaraugus County, New York.

Susan Koehler says that the family moved to Indiana, first the Lake County area, then to the Porter County area where Nicholas died near Hebron August 10, 1879 and Sarah (2nd) June 26, 1869. This data comes from FHL databases, census work, The Waterman Family, Descendants of Robert Waterman of Marchfield, Massachusetts by Edgar F. Waterman and Donald Lines Jacobus, Volumes I & II. It also comes from the 1912 History of Porter County, v. VII, obituaries, and cemetery registers. Some also comes from Western New York Land Transactions 1825-1835, extracted from the Archives of the Holland Land Company by Karen E. Livsey listing land transactions by Nicholas Berdine, all in 1835 in Cattaraugus County.

Susan also says there is some info in the LDS Family History Ancestral Files #AFN:1DJZ-581 and AFN:1DJZ-597, but not concerning offspring. Their IGI file has more data but mainly follows Sarah Waterman's line, which is quite well documented. It also shows the offspring of Nicholas' second family, the children of his second wife Sarah (Bartholomew) Baker.

Dave, you have his obit in the notes for Nicholas. You also have the names of his children.

Attached is a summary of the reasons Nicholas Berdine could not have been the son of Nicholas Bordine and Ann Webster from New Brunswick, and the evidence that he was probably the son of Jacob Bordine and Nancy Farmer...
