Notes for: Daniel James Bodine

Some of these children come from the censuses and some from Sinnott (p. 173). In the 1880 Census of Burlington County, there was a "Larra" living with them. She was one year old. At FamilySearch.com, I also found an Otella S. Bodine born to Daniel and Charlotte Bodine in 1864 in Hunterdon County. She might be a part of this family.

From Ronny Bodine:

In 1850, Daniel 'Bordine' and his family were living in Bordentown where Daniel worked as a blacksmith. The 1860 census records Daniel Bodine as being deaf and working as a blacksmith. The census of that year also recorded Alice Bodine, age 13, as a daughter, but in 1880 she is noted as being an adopted daughter. The will of Daniel Bodine, of Bordentown, dated 19 Dec 1870, was not submitted to the county court and verified by one of the subscribing witnesses until 11 March 1893 and proved on 5 April 1893. Therein, he named his wife Charlotte, who was also designated the executrix, son Thomas Bodine, daughter Anna Harrington, and adopted daughter, Alice Bodine (Burlington Co. Wills, W: 141). The will of Charlotte Bodine, of Bordentown, written 17 Aug 1883, was proved 11 March 1893. Therein, she named her children as William Bodine, appointed executor, Thomas, John and Stockton, and Charlotte Rebecca Simons (Burlington Co. Wills, W: 107). The death of Daniel Bodine was reported in the Bordentown "Register" of 17 Feb 1888 and the "New Jersey Mirror" of 22 Feb 1888.

Death Notice, Camden (NJ) Daily Telegram of Friday, 27 Jan 1893.
Charlotta Rebecca Bodine, aged 81 years, widow of the late Daniel Bodine, died at her home, in Bordentown, yesterday afternoon.

Dear Miss Sinnott:--

Replying to your letter of recent date I have been able to obtain the information as given below:
Daniel J. Bodine was born Jan. 26, 1811. He married Charlotte Pullen. They had seven children as follows: Thomas, born Aug. 11, 1837, Annie, Feb. 14, 1839, John H., Apr. 31, 1853, Stogden, Apr. 20, 1846, William, Apr. 11, 1848, Charlotte, Mar. 6, 1850, Phoebe Mar. 1, 1852.
I also inclose you a letter from S. Laurence Bodine. Probably you have had had (sic) correspondence with the same party, if not this letter will be of interest to you. I have written to a number of other Bodine's in the upper part of this state and I will advise you if I get any information from them. I understand you are trying to write up the history of the family. I trust you will be successful in doing so.

Yours very truly,
Wm. H. Bodine (signature)

In the foregoing letter, William Bodine (1848-1918), his son, gives the birth date of John H. as 31 April 1853 which must mean 30 April, Charlotte as 6 March 1850 whereas the Burlington County birth records give the date as 1 March 1850, and Phoebe as 1 March 1852 whereas county birth records give the date as 10 Sept 1852.
