Obituary, The New York Herald of 25 Feb 1919.
Dr. John Albert Bodine, of No., 182 West Fifty - eighth street, one of the leading surgeons of this country, died of cerebral hemorrhage in the New York Athletic Club, about half-past four o'clock yesterday afternoon. Dr. Bodine had been a resident member of the club for thirty years. He was seated in an armchair in the entrance hall when he suddenly fell forward. A physician pronounced him dead. Dr. William Pritchard, of No. 143 West Seventy-second street, a friend of Dr. Bodine, said that several weeks ago the latter had been infected while doing operative work, and that blood poisoning had resulted, and he believed this had something to do with his death. Dr. Bodine came of a family of physicians and surgeons, being the third in line in his family to take up the profession. He was born in Boyle county, Ky., in 1865. After graduating from the Roman Catholic University of Notre Dame, in Indiana, he entered the University Medical College, in Louisville, Ky., graduating in 1893. He came to this city that year and had specialized in surgery ever since. He was consulting surgeon at St. John's Hospital in Long Island City and for many years held the chair of surgery in the New York Polyclinic Medical School and Hospital. He was a member of several medical societies and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. Besides having the decree of M. D., he was a dental surgeon. He was distinguished as an author on medical subjects and as a lecturer, and is accredited with being one of the first to perfect the technique of local anaesthesia. Dr. Bodine leaves his widow, who was in Washington at the time of his death. She was immediately notified and left that city for her home.
