Notes for: John C. Bodine
I have a lot of conflicting information on this John Bodine. I will make some guesses based on all the info below. These guesses will need to be confirmed later by better research.
There is a John C. Bodine who died at age 64 around January 2, 1850 in Tyrone, New York. This is the date his death was reported in the Steuben Farmers Advocate newspaper. See "Death Notices in Steuben County Newspapers, 1797-1884," by Mary S. and Edward F. Jackson, Heritage Books, 1998.
I found the will abstract below at the Schuyler Co., NY GenWeb site:
BODINE John C - will dated 3 Dec 1849 - probate 18 Feb 1850 Tyrone, Steuben co. Executor - wife Elizabeth; exec 4 boys Charles, George (property at Wayne Hotel), Ralph, John; daughters: Louis Doty, Margaret Bailey & Sally Hallock. Witnessed by Edward Kernan & Lewis Hallock both of Tyrone.
The will above shows that this John C. Bodine had to die right around the end of 1849 and the beginning of 1850.
After finding some Bodines in the Wayne Baptist Cemetery in Tyrone, New York, I think that that John may be this one. He supposedly died November 11, 1859. He also seems to have had the name Ralph. He was 65 when he died. His wife, Elizabeth, died January 13, 1875 at age 81. There are also a bunch of Swarthouts in that cemetery.
I think someone transcribed John's stone incorrectly (and maybe Elizabeth's, too). The year of his death would have to be 1849 and the month would have to be December since his will was written on December 3. I will have to guess that the stone actually says December 11, 1849.
Kathy Hoeldke (hoeldke at hurontario.net) wrote me and and said that John Bodine had married an Elizabeth Swarthout. Kathy is compiling some kind of Swarthout book. This would seem to confirm my suspician that the John and Elizabeth buried in the Wayne Baptist Cemetery are the these Bodines. However, Kathy said that Elizabeth had children John, Sally, and George. So what about the rest of the children I have down for this John? Maybe they were the children of a previous wife? Whatever the case, I will include all the children mentioned in the will as offspring of John and Elizabeth until more evidence comes to light.
I later found that one site lists John Bodine, son of this Cornelius and Margaret, as the husband of Jane Clark. She was born in 1793 in PA. She died January 24, 1873 in Livingston, MI. I'm not sure how accurate that info is. It did not have good source info.
Sinnott (and maybe "Early Germans") says that this John died in 1846 at Wayne Hotel, Steuben County, New York (Sinnott, p. 158. "Early Germans," p. 268). I believe this is incorrect. I think there is a better chance that he died on December 11, 1849 in Wayne or Tyrone, New York. Tyrone is just below Wayne, New York. Both Wayne and Tyrone appear to be in Schuyler County; although, Wayne is very close to the Steuben County line.
I believe this is the John C. Bodine found in the 1820 Census of Wayne, Steuben (now Schuyler) Co., NY. Here is the data from that census:
1 male under 10: This was probably son John Bodine.
1 male 16-26: I'm not sure who this was.
1 male 26-45: This would have been John C. Bodine. He was about 35.
2 females under 10: These must be Lois and Margaret.
1 female 16-26: This would be John's wife. She was about 26.
This family is discussed in Edson Payson Bodine's article "The History of the Branch of the Bodine Family Founded by Cornelius Bodine, A Soldier of the Revolution, and a Pioneer of the Lake Country of Central New York" (1897). It is not a well-documented article, but the later genealogies are probably pretty accurate. His earlier genealogies may have more mistakes. This article says John had nine children. Missing from my information is Lewis (maybe the oldest child) and Patty (possibly between Margaret and Sally). This doesn't seem to match up with John's will, though. Then, Lewis and Patty might just not be mentioned. That's possible, but not normal - unless they died before their father did and without leaving children.

E. P. Bodine in his History of the Branch of the Bodine Family Founded by Cornelius Bodine, 1897, p. 16-17, names the following as children of John Bodine: Lewis Bodine, Lois Bodine Doty, Charles Bodine, Margaret Bodine Bailey, Patty Bodine, Sally Bodine Halleck, George Bodine, Ralph Bodine and John Bodine.

5: 264. Deed of 20 Aug 1830 from Cornelius Bodine & Mary, his wife, of Barrington, Yates County to John C. Bodine of Tyrone, Steuben County. 93 1/4 acres for $1100. Recorded 21 Aug 1830.
10: 92. Deed of 9 Jan 1835 from John C. Bodine & Elizabeth, his wife, of Tyrone, Steuben County to Cornelius Bodine, of Barrington, Yates County. 93 1/4 acres for $1100. Recorded 20 Feb 1835.
Tyrone was located in Steuben County until 1854 when portions of Steuben, Chemung and Tompkins Counties were combined to form Schuyler County.
From the War of 1812 Military Service Record of John C. Bodine:
John C. Bodine served as a Lieutenant in Capt. Covert's Company of New York Militia from 22 Sept to 3 Nov 1812, a total of 43 days. Under the Act of 14 Feb 1871, it required 60 days of service for a widow to qualify for a widow's pension and consequently the claim of Elizabeth Bodine was rejected on 31 May 1872. The case was reopened 19 Sept 1872 and rejection was reaffirmed 24 Sept 1872.
On 5 Feb 1869, the U.S. Pension Office reported Elizabeth Bodine claimed she married John C. Bodine on 15 May 1809.
Deposition of 21 July 1871 of Lois Van Fleet of Lenawee County, Michigan stating she was present at the marriage of John C. Bodine and Elizabeth Swarthout in 1810 "as near as she can remember it" and that it took place in the house of her father in Seneca County, New York and was married by a magistrate named Abraham Sebring and that she is a sister to Elizabeth Bodine.
Declaration of 25 July 1871 by Elizabeth Bodine, 78, of Tyrone. Schuyler County, NY, widow of John C. Bodine, to whom she was married 10 May 1811 "or thereabouts" by John Sebring, J.P. at Ovid, Seneca County, and that John C. Bodine died at Tyrone on 23 Dec 1850.
On 12 Aug 1871 it was noted John Bodine died 23 Dec 1853 at Tyrone, New York.
