Notes for: Catherine (Kate) Laboyteaux

I have guessed that Catherine Laboyteaux was the wife of this John Bodine based on the baptisms at the Raritan DRC and on Dutch naming customs. Sinnott also gives his wife's name as Catherine. Catherine's last name first came from the LDS site.

Here is some new information:

Subject: BODINE-LABOYTEAUX marriage?

Dave,

Do you know anything about this BODINE family? I am a LABOYTEAUX researcher. I have been trying to find information on Jean/John BODINE and his family.

JEAN / JOHN BODINE

Little is known of John Bodine and thus little is written of him. His BODINE parents and family members are unknown at this time. It is appears he was married perhaps around 1730 to Catherine LeBoiteaux/Laboyteaux, dau/o Gabriel LeBoiteaux/Laboyteaux and Agnes Constance LeBrun. Their children are given as: Gabriel (probably named for his maternal grandfather), Caterena, and Johannes, but nothing is known of the children either.

See Traders at Raritan Landing, http://www.raritanlanding.com/voices/traders.htm.

Under John Bodine...mentions Paul Laboyteaux (partner of John Bodine) and Paul's sister, Catherine (John Bodine's wife) and John's & Catherine's children: Gabriel, Caterena, and Johannes, all baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church in New Brunswick as it indicates, "We were as close to Catherine's people in Piscataway as we were to my own right here at the Landing." John & Paul were in business together by 1737, and John speaks of his wife, Catherine, being the sister of his partner.

It appears that John Bodine died young, for it is said that Catherine is believed to have married perhaps about 1740 to Daniel Sebring and by her had no heirs. It would seem also that Daniel could have been married previously, but no other record indicates this as Daniel appears to be about 30 years Catherine's senior, and Daniel is said to have had no heirs listed in his will. A joint sponsorship of a child being baptized and witnessed by Daniel Sebring and Catherine Laboyteaux would appear to provide some legitimacy to the marriage.

Catherine's mother, Agnes (Lebrun) Laboyteaux/Leboiteaux married as her second husband, Roelof Sebring.

Here is some info from Catherine's second husband's will:

1763 Nov 19 - Sebring, Daniel of Reading Twp, Hunterdon Co., NJ Wife Catherine gets house & 5 acres. To Daniel McKinney œ50, rest to nephews Daniel & Peter Belew, Mordecai McKenney and Peter Bodine. Son-in-law Peter Bodine and nephew Isaac Belew get apparel. Proved 31 Jan 1764.

Here is some information from Pam Sears online:

Howard Swain has found additional information which shows that Catharine LeBoyteaux, the daughter of Gabriel LeBoyteaux and Agnes LeBrun, was born circa 1712.

From the Register of Qualified Huguenot Ancestors... (1995). (under LaBoyteaux), the following children of Gabriel and Agnes are listed (thank you Howard):

Peter bap. 23 Mar 1703 [at Raritan Reformed] marr. c. 1730 to Jemymes Bries
Jantien bap. 1 Aug 1704 [at Raritan Reformed]
Benjamin bap. Apr 1709 [at Raritan Reformed]
Catherine born c. 1710/14; marr. to Daniel Sebring [no baptismal record found]
Marya bap. 18 May 1715 [at Raritan Reformed]
Gabriel bap. 3 Mar 1728 [I question this one. The record was not found; there was too much of a gap between the last two baptisms, and Agnes would have been in her 50's by then]

The creative baptismal records at Raritan (Som. Co. Hist. Quarterly) follow:

12 Mar 1703; Lebersten, Gabriell--Piter.
1 Aug 1704; Beten, Gabriel de and Constans--Jantien, b. June 17.
Witness: Jantien Cure.
27 Apr 1709; Beten, Gabriel and wife--Benjamin. Witness: Lisebet Beten.
18 May 1715; Betue, (???) and wife--Maria. Witness: (???) Merkiese (?)

Therefore, a birth date of say 1712 would fit with Catharine's marriage to Jan Bodine circa 1731, but would certainly PRECLUDE her from having married Daniel Sebring (bpt 1682) by 1720.

Pam also wrote this:

Since Jan Bodine died intestate before 9 April 1747, his widow Catharine Le Boyteaux would have been in the market for a suitable husband to help raise and support her 6 children (assuming they were all still living), and apparently Daniel Sebring was ready, willing and able; a real father figure for them all :-), since he was 30 years her senior as well.
