Notes for: Samuel ("Simon") Augustus Bodine
LDS records also had a Samuel Augustus Bodine as a son of James and Mary Louise Bodine. He was born in September of 1848 in Clinton Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. This seems to be this Simon A. Bodine. Frank Bodine (b. 1882) said Sam was a "wandering Jew." He roamed all over.
According to a Frank Bodine (b. 1882), their oldest son was named Roy. However, that does not line up with census information nor does it have any other supporting information. What appears more likely is that the oldest son, James Monroe Bodine, had the nickname "Roy."
From Ronny Bodine:
He appears as Samuel, age 2 in 1850; Samuel 15 in 1860, Simon in 1865, Samuel 21 in 1870, Simon in 1880-1920.
1875 Freeborn Co., MN: Samuel BODINE 26 IL, Mary 20 WI, James 0 MN, Mark 19 IN, James M. 17 IN.
In 1880, Simon Bodine lived in Rush Township, Rooks County, Kansas with his wife and 3 children, engaged in farming. He lived next door to his father James Bodine, age 68. In 1900, Simon Bodine lived with his wife and 10 children in Elberton, Whitman County where he worked as a day laborer, He reported that in 24 years of marriage his wife had borne 10 children, all of whom were then living with them. In 1910, he lived with his family in Colfax, Whitman County, now working as a contractor. Five of his 10 children still lived with him. In 1920, Simon Bodine, age 71 and Mary, age 67, lived in Webb, Nez Perce County, Idaho where Simon worked as a reservoir tender on an irrigation project. Three of their children lived with them. His Arizona death certificate states his father was James Bodine, that he died of prostate cancer and his body was shipped to Colfax, Washington for burial. The 1948 Washington death certificate of their son James M. Bodine named his parents as Samuel A. Bodine and Mary Dunning.
From Washington Death Records:
Mary H. Bodine, wife of S. A. Bodine, dau. of James M. Dunning & Helen Gates, died 4 Oct 1923 in Colfax, Whitman County, aged 68 years.
