Obituary, Shelbina (MO) Democrat of Wednesday, 14 April 1915.
Richard E. Bodine died at his home in Memphis, Tenn., a little after midnight, Friday night, of acute indigestion after an attack lasting only four hours. The evening before he had felt well enough to suggest a trip down town with his family, though he later decided not to go. He was seized with the fatal illness about 9 o'clock and died four hours later. Deceased was for many years a leading citizen of Shelbina. He was born in Paris, Sept. 30, 1851, and spent his life there until he was nearly thirty years of age. He was for several years in charge of the M. K. & T. station at Paris, as telegrapher and agent. About the year 1881 he left Paris and went to Humphreys, Sullivan county, where he engaged in the lumber business for a little over two years. In 1884 he came to Shelbina and engaged in the same business with Wm. Crow. After a few months he bought out his partner and continued the business alone, making of it a great success. He disposed of this business in the year 1903 and for a few years retired. Some time later he went to Memphis, Tenn., where his son had previously gone and became interested in the Memphis Sash and Door Co., with his son and others. He was vice-president of a Memphis bank for some time previous to his death. He was married June 13, 1872 to Miss Anna Parsons, a sister of S. G. Parsons of Shelbina. They have one son, Cooper P., who with the widow, mourn his sudden passing. Deceased was a public spirited and progressive citizen, genial and whole souled, with a charitable disposition and unfailing good humor. Though for the latter part of his life a constant sufferer from stomach trouble, few ever knew of it, for he complained little. Those who knew him best loved him the most and he leaves many friends in this section who are saddened by his death. Funeral services and interment were held at Memphis, Saturday afternoon.
Burials in Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.
