Notes for: William McMakin
Perhaps the best means of getting a picture of the early McMakin generations before the Loudoun Co. years is a summary of the research of Dean McMakin (135 Walnut Dr. #114, St. Charles, IL 60174) as presented in his unpublished typescript McMakin and McMeekin, Some Descendants of Alexander McMakin of Loudoun County Virginia. A copy of this work is in the library of the Filson Club, Louisville, Ky. William McMachon/McMechen, born ca. 1678, is first mentioned in New Jersey Proprietary Deed Book F-2, p. 11, 7 June 1722, in which he was of White Clay Creek Hundred, Newcastle Co., Pa., and sold a tract "Lush Moor" to Colin Campbell of Piscataway. On 2 June 1726, Letitia Aubrey, wife of William Aubrey of London and daughter of William Penn, sold 9613/4 acres on the south bank of Brandywine Creek to William (Newcastle Deed Book H-1, p. 58). His wife Janet/Janette McMechen, born ca. 1676, died 21 Aug. 1734 and was buried at White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church. William's second wife survived him when he died 8 Oct. 1738 and was buried next to his first wife. His son James is mentioned as executor of his estate (Deed Book W, pp. 480-83), but no will or estate papers are extant.
There are quite a few spellings of the name McMakin, especially among the earlier generations: McMachon, McMechen, McMackin, McMahan, McMicken, and McMeecken.
