Notes for: Thomas ("Tom") W. Bodine

This Thomas must have been the Thomas W. Bodine whose Civil War discharge papers say that he was born in 1834 in Wilson County, Tennessee. He enlisted in May of 1861 from Nashville. He became sick on October 23 of that same year and was discharged on November 25, 1861.

This is a query from bsteely at swbell.net from Sumner County, TN that came from the Internet on 5/10/1998:

I (Dave) would venture to guess that this Thomas Bodine "could" be the son or nephew of Thomas Bodine, son of John and Penelope Bodine who died in Wilson County, Tennessee.

I later received more information from Billie Curry Steeley saying that she had discovered that Thomas's father was actually Jefferson Bodine. Here is the message:

Dave,

As a matter of fact, this last year I found out. Thomas W. Bodine was a son of Jefferson Bodine, b. ca 1805, d. May 1850. Married 20 Dec. 1823, Wilson County, TN. He married Margaret Furgason (Ferguson). b. ca 1812 in TN, She was alive in 1850, in Wilson County, when the census was taken. Children: Abbot, Mirandy, Sarah Bodine (m. John Miles, Miles, Nancy, Elizabeth, Susan, Sophia Melinda, Margaret, Thomas W. Bodine, b. ca 1834, m. Sarah J. Day, 26 Nov. 1859.

Jefferson Bodine was a son of John Bodine, b. 1770 married 22 Dec. 1784 to Penelope Willis (Penny) in Wake Co., NC.

Rudie Slaughter has been a big help sorting Bodines out. I need to get it into my Genealogy program. The name was so badly mis-spelled they were hard to ferret out. I'll try to get that done.

From Ronny Bodine:

Thomas Bodine, age 16, was living with his mother in Wilson County in 1850. In 1858, Thomas W. Bodine petitioned for a jury to examine the sanity of mind of his sister, Nancy Bodine (Wilson Co. Court Minutes, 1856-1858, p. 351). On 26 Nov 1859 in Sumner County he married Sarah J. Day, daughter or Robert and Nancy J. (Robertson) Day. In 1860, T. W. Bodine, age 36, carpenter and Sallie, age 20, lived in Sumner County. It is known that Sarah was born 6 March 1841, so that her age of 20 is correct. Yet Thomas, who was 16 in 1850, should have been aged 26 in 1860. And in 1870, he was aged 45 and Sarah was 29.

On 20 May 1861, Thomas W. Bodine, who stated he was born in Wilson County, enlisted at Nashville and was assigned to Company K, 7th Tennessee Infantry, was taken sick 23 Oct 1861 in Lewisburg, Virginia, and was discharged there 25 Nov 1861 for disability. He returned to his home in Sumer County where he was living in 1870 with his wife and 5 children. After his death, his widow married George Duncan on 26 July 1874 in Sumner County.
