Notes for: Jonathan Anderson

In 1803, the family moved to Knox County, Indiana where they remained until 1816. They then moved to the Indian Territory north of the Red River. While there, he met his first wife. They were married in January of 1819 and left immediately for the San Augustine area of Texas, crossing into the state at Logansport on February 11, 1819. Jonathan died at age 91.

Jonathan ANDERSON/Nancy WHETSTONE

Cousin Barb,

...regarding Uncle Jonathan's 1st wife. 3g-Uncle Jonathan himself stated in a published interview in the Panola Watchman that "while living on the Red River he met and married Miss Nancy Whetstone of southwest Arkansas on 31 Jan 1819 and immediately set forth in a wagon to Ayish Bayou where his brother in law William English had settled just a few months before arriving at "Texas" 11 Feb 1819 his 21st birthday..."

...Uncle Jonathan and Nancy had only one child: Wyatt Anderson born 26 Sep 1819 - died 03 Jan 1863. He married his 1st cousin Mariah [Lout] who later drew a widow's pension on Wyatt's CSA service. US Fed 1850 Census: Roll M432-915,pg6,Fam #73 (Shelby Co Tx 9/13/1850): Anderson, Wiatt 31m Tx; Mariah 25f In; Marany E. 10f Tx; Pinckney 4m Tx; Levicy 2f Tx;+ an unrelated John Camaron.

Per my 3g-aunt Hannah [English] Payne Anderson's personal Bible, Perry was she and Uncle Jonathan's 1st child.

I've always felt like this [Nancy Whetstone] was probably the sister of Peter Whetstone who lived in Warrick Co, Indiana with our Anderson's, moved to Indian Territory about 1818 when 3g-grandfather Bailey Anderson Sr brought the last of the family from Indiana to Indian Territory, and later became a prominent man in Marshall, Texas. The History of Marshall, Texas has a good bit of information about him. Peter's daughter Elizabeth married Oliver Perry Anderson who was the son of Bailey Anderson Jr and Peter's son Warrick Whetstone was the 2nd husband of Salina [English] Anderson who was a niece to both Uncle Jonathan and Aunt Hannah.

Our cousin Mary Margaret [DuBose] Grubbs had copies of Uncle Jonathan's personal Bible pages several years ago (I never had these).

Uncle Jonathan and his wives Nancy [Whetstone], Hannah [English] Payne, and Sarah Biggers are buried in a "group" at the Old Anderson Cemetery in Carthage, Panola Co Tx. This cemetery is on ;and that was a part of our grandfather Wyatt Anderson's Texas landgrant of 1 League+1 Labor (Survey #350) which 3g-uncle Jonathan and my 2nd great-uncle George English "conspired together" to get awarded posthumously....and that 4g-grandpa Wyatt Anderson was no longer elible to receive as he had lived in the Louisiana side of the Neutral Zone since about 1828.

My gift to you.......
