Notes for: John Jay Bodine

The following comes from the Internet, but I'm not sure where:

William T. 0. Bodine was President of Kelsey Branch from Spring Conference 1905 to Spring Conference of 1908. The Bodine family came from Oklahoma. They were living in St. Augustine, Texas. According to granddaughter Nora Pickering, when William Thomas Bodine joined the Mormon church and his father disowned him. One brother, James, did write him. William married Matilda Elizabeth Click and had children before coming to the Mormon Colony in Upshur County, Texas. One son, Oscar, was born in Babyland, Texas.

Elder M. T. Blackburn's journal entry for December 5, 1902 states "In the afternoon we went to Gilmer starting on our journey among the Saints and elders. In the waiting room at the railroad station, we met Sisters Bodine and Cox with part of their families, all going to Kelsey. Brothers Bodine and Cox were coming with their teams and wagons'. Heber Jones said the Bodine's lived past Charles Shirley's home.

W. T. O. Bodine was second counselor to Kelsey's first Branch President Harless according to Sister Aaron's life story. To give a picture of general life at that time, I insert an entry from the journal of Elder James Brinkerhoff: "McKinney, Texas, March 9, 1904, Tuesday. We went to the train and got off for Kelsey on the M & E T Railroad at 8:20 p.m. Went to Greenville and bought tickets to Pittsburg. Had to lay over there from one o'clock till 12:15 at night for a train going to Gilmer where we were to get off. Got to Gilmer at one o'clock in the night. Were then six miles from Kelsey. Walked on out and got there at 2:20. Elders Hancock and Leak stayed with W E Reed and Pres. Davis and I went to Bro. W. T. 0. Bodines'. There we found Elder R. B. Boyack, missionary school teacher that year, and both got into bed with him.'

I do not know the order of birth of William and Matilda Bodine's children, but their names as given me by Nora B. Pickering were Minnie May, Silas Marion, William Elijah (died as an infant), John Jay, Arthur and Oscar (twins), and Archie Dee. Oscar married a Kelsey girl, Lou Armilda Harris, May 15, 1908. They remained in the branch and had two children before moving to Coleman, Texas. They lived there about three-and-a half years and came back to Kelsey. May 29, 1912, they left Kelsey to make Salt Lake City, Utah, their home. Nora Bodine Pickering of California is their daughter. John Jay had a son on a mission in Texas 1929-1931. He visited in Kelsey where he was born, and met many of his parents' friends. All the Bodine family went to Utah about 1912.

Ronny Bodine said that Mary Hubbard was his 1st wife. At his death in 1956, his wife was named on his death certificate as Mary Olivia. That came from info provided by son Reid J. Bodine of Phoenix. These other 2 wives came from undocumented sources. Ronny wonders if he was actually married to these two other women.

From Ronny Bodine:

In 1910, John and Mary Bodine lived in Upshur County engaged in farming. The census noted this was the 1st marriage for both parties and that they had been married for one year. In 1920-1930, the family lived in Salt Lake County, Utah where John worked as a machinist in a garage in 1920 and as a correspondence school salesman in 1930. In 1938 the Bodine family moved to Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. John and Mary Bodine were buried in Mesa Cemetery, Mesa, Maricopa County. Mary (Hubbard) Bodine was the daughter of Francis and Mary Margaret Clark (Taylor) Hubbard. Mary was the informant for the information contained in John's death certificate and was named thereon as his wife. Two other marriages are attributed to John Bodine, but it is uncertain as to when these marriages took place as he was married to Mary from 1909 until his death and one of the wives, Laura, died in 1918. If John was indeed married to these women, then at least two of the marriages were concurrent, apparently under early Mormon law. Both women were buried under their maiden names which adds to the uncertainty. Laura Click was the daughter of Henry Lawson and Annie (Haggerton) Click. Lily Hadler was the daughter of Thomas W. and Mary (Selvage) Hadler.
