Notes for: Joseph Newton Owen
California Deaths and Burials (1776-2000) say he was born in Illinois and died in Sacramento at age 29. He was married, a brakeman and lived in Sacramento City, CA. He died of pneumonia.
I don't know if the following census data applies to this Joseph Owen, but it is possible. That is just a guess at this point.
In 1850, there is a James (age 45, farmer, MD) and Mary (age 43, NY) living in Tazewell County, IL. In this household also is Francis (age 15, IL), Samuel (age 11, IL), John (age 7, IL) and Joseph (age 2, IL).
In 1860, there is a Joseph Owens (age 12, IL) in the household of James (age 55, farmer, MD) and Mary (age 53, NY) Owens in Tremont Twp., Tazewell Co., IL. That is near Peoria and not too far north of Washington Co., IL. He has a brother John (age 17, IL) with him.
I cannot find this family in the 1870 Census. Mary might be on her own in 1870 in the Census of Fountain Green, Hancock Co., IL. Again, though, that is a guess.
In 1870, it looks like Joseph "Owens" was a railroad laborer living in the household of Henry (age 49, IL) and Jane (age 47, IL) Sackett, a farmer, in Washington County, IL. He was 23 and born in Illinois. He was with a bunch of other railroad workers in that household.
By July 1875, Joseph Newton Owen is a registered voter in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA.
