Anthem - Kathy Vranich, 66, died Thursday February 15 from kidney cancer. She was diagnosed with stage-four kidney cancer in November of 2012. After diagnosis, Kathy managed her illness by enjoying life and helping other cancer victims through many clinical trials. Kathy died comfortably in her sleep at home with her husband Jim by her side. She had been under home care by compassionate workers from Hospice of The Valley. Born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Birmingham, MI, Kathy was the oldest child of Norman (deceased) and Mary Bodine. Her brother Gerald resides in Denver, CO. She graduated from Groves High School in 1969 and earned a nursing degree at Nazareth Nursing College in Kalamazoo, MI. She also earned a home economics degree at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI. At Western Michigan she joined the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Her last nursing assignment was in the Bariatric Ward, Scottsdale Shea Hospital now known as Honor Health. She is survived in death by her mother Mary (Sun City Center, Florida) brother Gerald (Holly) and husband Jim along with her two sons and their wives, Michael (Lauren) Eastchester, NY and Kurtis (Marlene) Katonah, NY and four grandchildren: Michael Jr., Nathan, Nicholas and Charlotte. She traveled often to New York to be with her sons, their wives and grandchildren. Kathy enjoyed being a grand mother by baking Mini-Papa Murphy's pizzas and drawing on paper-covered tabletops with her grandchildren. She also taught them how to make tasty s'mores chocolate marshmallow deserts. Kathy enjoyed playing golf with her Chicks with Sticks friends. She traveled to many locations to complete her bucket list including a wonderful Mediterranean cruise. Kathy volunteered at the St. Vincent De Paul homeless shelter in Phoenix and the Foothills Food Bank in Cave Creek. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Kathy's name to either charity. Kathy's funeral mass will be at St. Rose Catholic Parish, Anthem, AZ and she will be interred at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Phoenix, AZ. Kathy believed every day was a gift. Her family and friends will miss her daily gift to us.
