Notes for: John Oliver Bodine

He was injured in a battle in Jonesboro, Georgia while in the CSA. His brother Joseph was killed in the same battle. John's injury occurred on August 24, 1864, but he did survive to return to the San Augustine area of Texas. There he married and raised a family.

Subject: John (Oliver) Bodine Family Bible on eBay

Hi Dave,

I also do genealogy research and occassionally I have a look at the Family Bible up for auction on eBay, just hoping that some day our lost family bible may turn up....Well no luck so far, but I try to contact other researchers when I find one that they might be interested in. Since you have so much research on the Bodine family, I thought you would be the one to contact.

The starting bid is $49.99 US, there is approx. only 19 hours left on the auction and the is no bidders on it as yet.

This is what the seller has listed:

***1868 Leather Bound, Large Print, Complete Holy Bible

1868 Brown, Big, Thick, Leather Bound, Holy Bible. All pages are intact, but the binding is coming apart. First page states the following "The Holy Bible containing the old and new testaments: translated out of the original tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. New York: American Bible Society instituted in the year MDCCCXVI 1868".

The family history section is partially filled out. The first entry is the marriage of John Bodine and Sarah Epper in 1865 with several generations listed afterwards.

The bible is in the "Books" category and the item # is 260065770939...

Best of luck,
Dawn

From Ronny Bodine:

John Bodine enlisted 1 March 1862 at San Augustine as a Private with Company C, 27th Texas Cavalry Regiment (CSA). From tradition, John was severely wounded during CSA action near Jonesboro, Georgia and never fully recovered. In 1870, John and Sarah Bodine lived in San Augustine County engaged in farming and neighboring John J. Sanders. Per family tradition, he and Sarah were given the old Sanders place as a reward for taking care of John J. Sanders during his declining years. The Bodine Cemetery near San Augustine is located on this old farm.

Sarah Eppes was the daughter of Charles and Sarah (Edgar) Eppes. In 1880, Sarah Bodine (as S.O. Bodine) lived with her 4 children and brother James Epps in San Augustine County engaged in farming. In 1910, 'Attillia' Bodine, age 68, lived with her son Charles Bodine in San Augustine County. She reported that of her 5 children, 4 were then living. Sarah lived many years as a widow before entering into a second marriage. John Bodine did return to San Augustine County after release from the army and lived several years before his death. Sarah's remarriage went against the wishes of the family because she was drawing a CSA pension as a widow and as a consequence lost the pension.
