Notes for: Oliver Hazard Perry Bodine, Sr.

Below is a close-up of Oliver Hazard Perry Bodine, Sr.'s headstone. It's difficult to read, but it should say, "OHP Bodine, Born Jan 22, 1819, Died Aug 20, 1889." Jim Bodine sent this picture in. He said, "This stone is located in the old Bodine/Sanders Cemetery located about four miles north of San Augustine. The cemetery is located off FM1279 between State Highway 147 and State US Highway 96. There are no markings to show its location and it is on private property. It is normally open for visiting but assistance may be required to find its location."

Grave of O.H.P. Bodine, Sr.

Stephanie Carpenter (poohbr19762003 at yahoo.com) later told me that this Bodine Cemetery is located on the land where her grandmother, Oleta (Bodine) Rule, lives (as of August 2003). It has been in the Bodine family for generations. From San Augustine, turn off of 96 onto Bland Lake Road. Go about 3 miles and you will pass Bland Lake on the left. On your right will be a few chicken houses and a brick house. Right after the brick house, there will be a driveway. Go up the drive and you will see Oleta's house on the hill. Stop and talk to her. She may take you back to the land where the cemetery is or tell you how to get there. She knows all about the cemetery. Some of the headstones are very hard to read and some of them cannot be read at all.

OHP, Sr. was about six years old when his family arrived in Texas. Family tradition holds that other boys were born to John and Nancy, as many as four, but the first area census showed only OHP and William. OHP was the oldest surviving male at the time that the first census was taken in the San Augustine area. He was shown to be fourteen years old at the time that the census was taken. The majority of his life was spent in and around San Augustine County, Texas.

Linda Houck says that OHP was named for his father's Navy commander in the War of 1812.

From Ronny Bodine:

From San Augustine County, Texas Marriage Records:
Oliver P. Bodine AND May Ann Sanders were married 6 Sept 1841.

Oliver Bodine was buried in the old Bodine/Sanders Cemetery about 4 miles north of San Augustine. The inscription on the stone reads "OHP Bodine, Born Jan 22, 1819, Died Aug 20, 1889."
