Samuel Culbertson a brother of Captain Alexander Culbertson, who was killed by the Indians near Fort McCord, April 2 , 1756, emigrated from Culbertson Row, County Antrim, Ireland and with his brother settled in what became Greene Township, Franklin County, PA. The place was called Culbertson Row after the one in Ireland. This was between 1730 and 1735. Samuel, known as 'Irish Samuel' to distinguish him from others of the same given name, served as 'Sargeant-Major in Colonel Hugh Mercer's Battalion of Pennsylvania Provincial Troops in 1758.' When this organization was proceeding against Fort Duquesne, December, 1758, the French garrison destroyed it and fled in the bateuax.
"Irish Samuel was in the service in 1759 being stationed at Fort Duquesne under Colonel Mercer. No further mentions of him in this war has been found. He was a wealthy and influential man. At one time he owned nearly 2000 acres of l and.
