John Garland "Atch" Atchison, 75, of Beaumont, TX, died June 17, 2003, after a valiant battle with cancer.A native of Okemah, OK, Mr. Atchison moved to Beaumont more than 50 years ago and considered himself a "native Texan by choice." He adopted the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Astros as his home teams and was a loyal supporter through good seasons and bad. He worked for the Beaumont Enterprise for 25 years and, during that time, met and married his wife of 46 years, Nancy Bodine Atchison. He left the Enterprise to become a rural postal carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked until retirement. He brought fun and laughter to the lives of all who knew him, and his humor and gracious spirit will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving family--his wife, five children and nine grandchildren: Katy and Phil Harris of Conroe, TX, grandsons Anthony and Jason and granddaughter Joanna; John T. and Sherri Atchison of Las Vegas, NV, and grandson Taylor; David and Carol Atchison of Beaumont and grandsons Matthew and Adam; Polly and Ken Sheesley of Henderson, NV, and granddaughter Savannah; Laura and Scott Wagner of Houston and grandsons John Dylan and Jackson.He is also survived by his two sisters: Pauline Atchison of Okemah, OK, and Flo Campbell of Oklahoma City, OK; and his brother, Rudy Atchison, of Rogers, AK, as well as many friends and extended family. A family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society or The Audubon Society. "Far greater than all other men that I know, he's my dad, my mentor, my friend, and my hero."
