Services for Leo Waits, 80, of Pella, who died April 10, 1990 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, were held April 13 at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery, Knoxville. Rev. Neil Cross officiated at the services. Music was provided by Lonnie Gerber, organist, and Gene Newman, soloist.
Pallbearers and honorary bearers were Phillip, Ron, Rick, Denny, Ronnie, Jr., and Jason Waits, Bill and Randy Landgrebe, L.D., Kevin, and Galen Modlin, Lawrence Bittner, Doug Vander Waal, and Jeff Newman.
Mr. Waits was horn on June 4, 1909 at Swan, the son of Coy and a Julie Stanberry Waits. On Sept. 22, 1933, he married Helen Esther Rexroat at the Coalport parsonage. He was a lifelong resident of Marion County where he farmed until he moved into Pella in 1955. He was then employed by Farmers Coop Exchange and later by Rolscreen Company from where he retired in 1974.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jackie; his parents; four brothers, Foy, Edgar, Henry and Elmer; and three sisters, Mrs., Leo (Vernie) Kamp, Mrs. Frank (Retha) Walker; and Mrs. Glenn (Dortha Fuller.
He is survived by his wife; four sons, Phillip, Ronald, Richard and Dennis, all of Pella; four daughters, Mrs. Bill (Roberta) Landgrebe and Mrs. L.D. (Shirley) Modlin, both of Newton, Mrs. Gene (Sharon) Newman of Pella, and Mrs. Lawrence (Phyllis) Bittner of Bedford, Va.; 22 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 13great- grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Merle (Helen) Reynolds of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.
A memorial has been established to the American Lung Association.
