Raleigh Dewitt Vanderwaal was born in Marion County on Feb. 4, 1928, the son of Roy and Pauline (Dewitt) Vanderwaal. He died at the Collins Memorial hospital in Knoxville on Dec. 17 after a lingering illness.
He was 39 years, 10 months and 13 days of age. His lifetime was spent in the Monroe community, where he farmed. For the last three years he had been in the insurance business. He was a member of the Monroe Baptist church.
Mr. Vanderwaal graduated in 1945 from the Kemper Military school in Missouri. He served in the army during the occupation of Japan and also for 11 months during the Korean conflict.
Oct. 15, 1949, at Monroe, he married Darlene Mae Postma. She survives, along with their two children, Randy Dean and Paula Sue. He is also survived by his father, Roy D. Vanderwaal, and his stepmother, Jessie Fennema Vanderwaal.
His mother died 24 years ago.
Funeral services were held at the Monroe Baptist church Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. Family Prayer Services were held at the Garden Chapel at 9:45 a.m. The Rev. Wayne K. Anderson officiated at the services.
Mrs. Devayne Honnold was organist for “How Great Thou Art’. Casket bearers were John Van Rykswyk, Merritt Van Roekel, Wilfred Roose, Harold Vande Kieft, Ralph Stewart and Delmar Currier. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur De Vries and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Vander Ploeg assisted with the flowers.
Burial was in the Silent City cemetery of Monroe with arrangements by Garden Chapel.
