Valda Mae Halverson was born on March 31, 1927, at West Union, Iowa. She was one of five children that were born to Edward S. and Agnes (Mosby) Halverson. Valda began her formal education in West Union. She attended school there until she was in the fourth grade when the family moved to Pella, Iowa. She graduated from Pella High School with the Class of 1944 and then attended Central College for one year. Following her formal education Valda worked for the State Tax Commission in Des Moines, Iowa and the Van Zante Law Firm in Pella. On September 3, 1947, she was united in marriage with Ralph Lloyd Vander Waal and to this union three children were born: Steven Craig, Gayle Ellen and Jeffery Mark. Following their marriage Valda worked at several jobs in Pella, the last one was at the Marvel Law Office. Valda loved her family and her home. She was very involved in her church, the Third Reformed Church. She had taught Sunday School and was a leader in growth groups. Valda was a very spiritual person who witnessed her faith in a quiet, dignified manner. Evidence of this was her faithfulness to her husband, Ralph, and later to the care and support she provided for Rev. Henry J. Vermeer. A woman of many talents, Valda was an accomplished seamstress, did beautiful handwork and enjoyed playing her electric piano. Through all this she found peace and the evidence of God’s goodness to those who believe in Him. As Valda’s cognitive skills began to decline she became a resident at Jefferson Place in Pella in January of 2012. She passed away there late Tuesday evening, January 1, 2013, at the age of 85 years. Valda is survived by three children and their families: Dr. Steven C. Vander Waal and his wife, Michele, and her daughter, Malea, of Manzanita, Oregon; Gayle E. and her husband, Stanley E. Poortinga, of Pella, Iowa and their two children: Michelle Anne and her husband, John L. Olson and their daughter, Madeline of Denver, Colorado , Marc R. Poortinga and his wife, Ellen, and their daughter, Maree of Scottsdale, Arizona; Jeffery M. Vander Waal and his wife, Tiffani, and their two children: Ryan M. and Tyler N. Vander Waal of Elk Grove, California.
