Notes for: Aart (Art, Arthur) Van Der Waal

His wife is a Tysseling and the sister of the Teunis Albert Tysseling mentioned in the "Souvenir History of Pella, Iowa" (1922) on p. 186. It says his sister is married to an Aart van der Waal and was living in Erskine, Minnesota. It did not give his sister's name, but family trees at WorldConnect give her name as "A. Adrianna Tysseling." That is this "Antonia A." And her maiden name comes out many times in records of her children, too.

That would also mean Antonia was born in Ede, Province of Gelderland, the Netherlands.

In 1895, they were living in Clay Township in Marion County, Iowa. He, his wife and his nine children were listed. He and his wife were born in the Netherlands and his children in Marion County.

The Pella Blade of Nov 5, 1899 says they were in Pella visiting for a few days from near Durham [Marion County] because of the death of Antonia's mother, Mrs. H. Tysseling.

He is located there during this census.

Their name is mistakenly transcribed as Vanderwart. Children are Minnie H., Henry E., William R., Albert T., Laura E., Gertrude M., and Izora L.

1930 US Census of Brooks, Poplar River Twp., Red Lake Co., MN
Antonia is living with her son Henry. Henry's sister Minnie H. Vanderwaal is also there. Antonia is 75.

His obituary seems to be in Dutch. It is in the Pella Weekblad of June 30, 1916. I think it might say he was living in Erksine, MN (Polk County). The Minnesota Death and Burial records do say he died in Poplar River, Red Lake Co., MN. His mother is listed as "Willimintje Bowna." I think that matches a record for his brother Antonie. So the maiden name of his mother might not be Riedijk.

Here is his obituary in Dutch:

Aart van der Waal Obituary 1916

In summary it says this: Aart van der Waal. Wednesday evening June 21, 1916. He was 63 years 11 months and 21 days old [that's close but not quite accurate]. It says he died while sick at his home in Erskine, MN. He left behind a widow and nine children.

The Pella Chronicle of June 29, 1916 (p5) says that Art's funeral was on Monday. That would be June 26.
