Obituary, Binghamton (NY) Press & Sun Bulletin of 22 May 2013.
Reatha M. (Puffer) Budine, 85, passed away on Sunday, May 19, at her home in Walton. Born July 24, 1927 to Jay and Ruth Puffer of Granton, NY, she graduated from Deposit High School and married Donald J. Budine of Walton on June 20, 1945. He predeceased her in 1985. Reatha was an active member of the Beerston Presbyterian Church, serving as Sunday School Director for many years and was the last of her generation from Beerston. Following the ending of that church, she became a member of the Walton United Presbyterian Church and was active there for the rest of her life. She was continually working with the various Ladies' Aide groups, served several terms as Deacon, and contributed her renowed baked goods to all fund-raisers and church functions. She rarely missed church services and was there Sunday morning just before her passing. She was a homemaker for many years while her children were small and, with Donald, owned and operated Budine's Drive-In ( now TA's) for several years. Following retirement from business, Reatha worked in DVH for many years in the Respiratory Therapy Dept. In full retirement, she continued her dedication to serving others by doing home health care for many individuals in Walton. She was in constant demand for her work and helped a large number of people who were less able. Even moments before her own passing, she was doing errands for someone that needed her. She also served the American Red Cross in running the local bloodmobiles and, in addition, served many local charities and organizations. Reatha was a dedicated gardener, often seen tending her flower beds, or working in her beloved blueberry patch on South River Road. She loved being in the outdoors and getting gardens and flowers to prosper. She was also a dedicated pinochle player and played several times a week with friends and family. Of greatest importance to her, however, was her family. She was always interested in the progress of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She delighted in receiving phone calls or visits from them and kept the family record of events shared among all. She is survived by her children: Gail (William) Laughland of Endwell, Suzanne (John, Jr.) Marsico of Walton, and Alan (Barbara) Budine of Walton; her grandchildren, Darron (Zsuzsanna) Laughland of Conway, NH, Deidre (Jamie) Laubach of Saranac Lake, NY, John (Barbara) Marsico III of Massapequa, LI, NY, Kia Marsico of Sidney, NY, Matthew J. (Cristie) Budine of Wilmington, NC, and Kyle A. (Tammy) Budine of Walton, NY; her great grandchildren; Patrick and Tucker Laughland of Conway, NH, Jackson and Madeline Mae Laubach of Saranac Lake, NY, and Gabriella and Victoria Marsico of Massapequa, LI, NY. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Toni Budine of Walton and Judy (Puffer) Fischer of Hobart. She also is survived by a number of close friends, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Gleason Puffer of Unadilla and John Puffer of Walton. In keeping with Reatha's wishes a celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 12 noon at the United Presbyterian Church, 58 East St., Walton. Services and burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions in Reatha's memory may be made to the American heart Assn., Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049; Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820; American Cancer Society, 5 Oak St., Sidney, NY 13838; or the American Red Cross, 33 Everett Rd., Albany, NY 12205, or the United Presbyterian Church, 58 East St., Walton, NY 13856.
