Notes for: Mary Amanda ("Mandy") Cook
A well-written article by James L. Murphy (from "History of Monroe County, Mississippi," vol. 2) sent to me by Kimberly A. Landry Richards (PhD, DipG, NCC, Family Historian, Ancestry Connections Genealogy) on the Alexander Murphy family says Mary Amanda was the daughter of Isaac W. Cook and Pamela Murphy, not a George Washington Mears. Mary Amanda's maiden name was Cook on her marriage license & record of January 6th & 16th, 1845 in Monroe County, Mississippi. The death certificate of James and Mandy Stephenson's daugther Sarah says her mother was a Mandy Cook (Cook listed as "maiden name of her mother").
The death date was provided to Mrs. Sallie Whitton of San Augustine County by Jewel Defee Potts of the Neuville Community of Shelby County. It is possible that Mary remarried prior to the available records from 1882. She would have been a widow for as many as thirteen years from the death of her husband in about 1869. Mrs. Potts had no memory of any interim marriage. She did remember that Mary A. was buried in the Rather Cemetery.
