Notes for: Elizabeth ("Betsy") Bodine
By tradition and censuses, Elizabeth was the oldest child of John Bodine and Nancy Gunnels. She and Pinckney Lout were already married and had three children prior to 1833. It appears that she had five children in her marriage to Pinckney Lout and three children by Burwell Eaves. At this time the best info indicates that she must have died in San Augustine County, Texas about 1866. The county tax record for 1866 was administered by someone other than herself. A large probate record exists in the San Augustine County records.

SUSAN MARRIED HIRAM LAFAYETTE SAMFORD AND IN THE 1880 SHELBY CO TX CENSUS HER MOTHER, J. W. EAVES, AGE 63 WAS LIVING WITH THEM. IN ALL CENSUSES BUT THE 1880, SUSAN AND WILLIAM M. SAID THEIR MOTHER WAS BORN IN ALABAMA, NOT GA.
PINCKNEY LOUT, JR., WAS, AS ONE CENSUS PUT IT, A LUNATIC.
IF YOU CAN DETERMINE WHERE SUSAN WAS FROM 1860 TO 1880, I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ACCESS TO THE INFO.

On 27 Feb 1835, Pinckney Lout was given title to a land patent of 4428.40 acres in Jefferson District, Orange County, Texas (Patents vol. 22, no. 287). He served under Bailey Anderson at the Siege of Bexar and received an honorable discharge on 20 Feb 1836. On 22 Nov 1837, Colonel Jacob Snively wrote to Sam Houston that Pinckney Lout had been killed the Sunday before. (From the Houston Williams Papers - Texas State Archives.) As related by family members, Pinckney was shot to death by the wife of a shopkeeper in the village of San Augustine regarding the purchase of a pig. In 1850, Elizabeth Lout, giving her age as 32, was living near her mother in San Augustine County, with her 3 children. In 1860, Elizabeth Eaves, now reporting her age as 47, and widowed a second time after only four years of marriage, was living near her mother probably still on the Bodine property. Her large household included 3 children of her 2nd husband's previous marriage.
