Notes for: Frank Boynton (Cole) Berdine

Despite some documents mentioned below, Frank Boynton Berdine actually appears to be the son of Emma Berdine and her husband Lucien Cole - not the son of William and Angeline Berdine. So Frank would be the grandson of William and Angeline Berdine. His age on the 1880 Census is not clear, but he was born in April. He is listed as a Cole in the 1880 Census. Here is the census info Ronny sent me from 1880 and 1900.

1880 (4 June) Waterbury, New Haven Co.: William BODINE 54 NJ gilder, Angeline 49 CT wife, Lucien D. COLE 30 VT plater boarder, Emma 22 CT boarder, Frank 2/12 CT boarder, John 8 CT boarder.

From Massachusetts Federal Census Records:
1900 (6 June) Newburyport, Essex Co.: Lucien COLE Oct 1850 VT, Emma A. Aug 1857 CT wife, Mary F. April 1880 CT dau, Harry F. June 1886 MS son, Kathryn Oct 1895 MA dau, Vesta A. BODINE Jan 1831 CT mo-in-law widowed, Frank B. May 1874 CT single traveling salesman. Lucien & Emma were married 23 years and had 6 children of whom 3 were still living. Vesta had borne 4 children of whom 2 were still living.

Since Emma married Lucien Cole in 1877 and, according to his obituary, Frank was born in May of 1874, then maybe Emma had Frank by another person and then Frank was raised by William and Angeline, his grandparents. Anyway, this is all speculation at this point. Maybe some living family member can help clarify all this.

From Ronny Bodine (Oct. 30, 2020):

Frank Boynton Berdine was born Frank Boynton COLE, son of Emma Berdine and Lucien Cole and raised (adopted?) by his maternal grandparents William and Emma Berdine who are named as his parents in Frank's 1906 marriage record and 1953 obituary. However, the 1880 census, next, shows Frank as Frank Cole, living with his natural parents, Lucien and Emma Cole, as boarders in the household of Emma's father William Berdine. It should also be noted that Frank was born 3 years before his parents were married and that he may be the child of Emma by an earlier relationship despite the fact that the birthplace of Lucien Cole is Vermont which is also noted as Frank's father's birthplace.

1880 (4 June) Waterbury, New Haven Co.: William BODINE 54 NJ gilder, Angeline 49 CT wife, Lucien D. COLE 30 VT plater boarder, Emma COLE 22 CT boarder, Frank COLE 2/12 CT boarder, John COLE 8 CT boarder.

On 11 Sept 1918, Frank Boynton Berdine registered for the World War 1 draft in Newburyport, Essex County, Mass. He stated he was born 18 May 1874 and Erma Eunice Berdine was his next of kin.

From Suffolk County, Massachusetts Marriage Records:
Frank B. Berdine, 32, of Newburyport, salesman, son of William Berdine & Vesta A. Byington AND Irma Eunice Pulsifer, 23, of Westfield, daughter of Joseph M. Pulsifer & Harriet Lovejoy, were married 5 June 1906 in Boston, by W. H. Morrison, clergyman.
