Hi, Dave ~
The Bodine immigrants from Sweden Americanized the spelling to Bodine. The truth behind the name is that is was actually a Military name assigned to Anthony's father Anton (whose name was not really Anthony) & Anton's brother when they were soldiers in the Swedish Army. The assigned Military name was Bodin (no ''e'' at the end). And what I mean by a Military name is that all Scandinavian countries before the 1900s had patronymic surnames (like Jacobsson, Thomasson, Eriksson, Ulriksson - meaning ''son of'' their father's first name). The Anthony J Bodine (born 1880 Sweden) did not truly have a father named Anthony Bodine. His father's real Swedish name was Anton August Thomasson. And Anton's father was Thomas Jacobsson. So many people in Sweden shared the same names, so when the young men went into the Army, they were assigned Military names based on the name of their family's farm in which they lived, or came from. Anton's family farm was called Botels. Earlier spelling of Botels was Batels. The sound of the beginning of the farm name is used & then ''in'' is added to the end of it to make the military name. So in the case of Botels, the military name became ''Bod + in'', as Bodin. Names like these were sort of like address names, to separate an Anton Thomasson Bodin (from Botels) from an Anton Thomasson (from a different farm name).

By the way, Botels is located in När, Gotland, Sweden. That's where Anton August Thomasson was born on 31 August 1853.

There is a sad part to the story too. When Anton Thomasson Bodin & his brother emigrated from Sweden, Anton left his family (wife Anna & children) behind. Anton & his brother took their father's surname of Jacobsson (Americanized to Jacobson). Although Anton already had a wife & children, which he left abandoned in Sweden, he married another woman in Michigan instead.

I can email all the Swedish records & the American records to you & Ronny.

Subject: Bodine - Emigration record attached

Dave,
...

The Anthony J Bodine (as he was known by in Ohio) was actually given the birth name of Anton when he was born in Sweden. Anthony had a sister whose real birth name was Wendla. She was about 3 years older than him. Those 2 children emigrated from Sweden together in June 1893. They came alone. No mother. If I remember correctly, their mother Anna had died in Sweden. Wendla was age 15 & Anthony (Anton) was about 12. I believe that the 2 children set out for America, thinking that they could find their father. But I do not think that they ever saw him again.

Attached is the June 1893 emigration record of Wendla Bodin, age 15, & Anton Bodin, age 12.

Anthony married Dora Smith on 11 June 1908 in Summit Co., Ohio. But I don't know what ever happened to Wendla after they reached America. I imagine that Anthony & Dora's family in Ohio probably know though.

It's getting late here. I will send more images tomorrow after work.
