Notes for: William Oliver ("Ollie") Burdine / Bodine

William Oliver Bodine adopted "Burdine" as the spelling of his name. His family continued to use this. They lived in Blount County, Tennessee. See the note under his mother about a lawsuit. The following is speculation only: His stepfather, Calvin Clinton, was involved in a lawsuit with a William Smith and others that involved his father's will. Could the outcome of this suit have caused him to change his family's name to "Burdine?"

A little piece of info if you would like to know, I have recently received scanned copies of the family bible of my gg-grandfather Calvin Clinton, who was William Oliver’s step father. William Oliver’s birth date is recorded in that bible as August 5, 1856.

The marriage records for Sevier County record the marriage of Oliver Burdine to Elizabeth Gibson on 17 Dec 1875. All subsequent records record the family name as Burdine and this has been carried down among his descendants. In 1880, as William O. Burdine, he worked as a farmer in Sevier County. A deed dated 6 May 1889 between Oliver Burdine and Elizabeth Burdine of Sevier County to Lucinda Etherton and W. L. Etherton, also of Sevier County is the last known record for Oliver. He is believed to have died soon after. On 19 Feb 1896, his widow remarried, and did so again in 1906 and a fourth time after 1915.
