Lee Stapleton was a farmer and service station owner. He and Johnnie were later divorced. Johnnie retired in 1980 after 14 years as a saleswoman with Greenville Sporting Goods.

WOLFE CITY - Johnnie Lacy Stapleton, 98, died Oct. 28, 2010, in Van Alstyne. A celebration of Mrs. Stapleton's life will be conducted by Rev. Jerry Colgrove at 11 a.m. today at R. W. Owens & Son Funeral Home chapel, with family visitation beginning at 9:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. She was born at noon, June 6, 1912, in the Celeste home of her parents, Nannie and Jake Bodine. After Mr. Bodine's death, Johnnie's mother married R.H. Lacy, and he became Johnnie's "Daddy Lacy." Johnnie attended school in Wolfe City. For a brief time her family moved to Oklahoma, but they moved back to the Hunt County area after a few years. Her adult life was lived in Greenville and Dallas, but primarily in Celeste. Health issues took her from Celeste to the Pythian Guest House in Greenville in the summer of 2005. In the summer of 2008 she was moved to Country Home Estates in Commerce, then in April 2009 she moved to Meadowbrook Care Facility in Van Alstyne. As long as she was able, Johnnie was an active member of Celeste First United Methodist Church. When she was no longer able to actively participate, she supported her church family in prayer. She always asked about "her church in Celeste." She served on many church committees, taught children's Sunday School and Vacation Bible School classes, participated in the United Methodist Women's missionary group and the Flora England Sunday School class. Her work career was mostly in Greenville at Kress, Woolworth's, Hickman's Gift Shop, Hogue's Toyland, Alcorn TV and Greenville Sporting Goods. From an early age, she knew about working in the field, and she continued doing that as an adult, working until dark after putting in a day's work as a clerk in Greenville. She found time to work in her yard and grow beautiful flowers amidst the stately pecan trees around her home. She enjoyed participating in many clubs. Canning fruits and vegetables was a passion of hers. She will be remembered for her servant spirit for Jesus Christ to her church, her family and her community. Her survivors are daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Mike Weatherley of Van Alstyne; granddaughter Michelle Clark and husband Cliff and their children, Christian, Matthew and Andrew of Arlington' grandson Chris Weatherley and wife Sherry and daughters Isabel and Kate of Denton; sister Helen Odom of Greenville; nephews Bill Watson of Greenville, Charles Lacy of Pinehurst, N.C., Tommy Lacy of Rowlett; nieces Betty Bost of Greenville and Bobby Kirkwood of Rowlett; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Nannie and R.H. Lacy, and brother, Alvin Lacy. Memorials may be made in her honor to the Celeste First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 495, Celeste, 75423, or to the Meadowbrook Care Facility in care of Heidi Patrenos, Administrator, P.O. Box 307, Van Alstyne, 75495. The family wants to express thanks to each caregiver for the loving care given to Mrs. Stapleton the past five years in Greenville, Commerce and Van Alstyne. Her family is most grateful for the compassionate, loving care from the Hospice Plus nurses as they ministered to Mrs. Stapleton in her last days.
