Obituary, Chicago Tribune (Chicago, Ill.) of 26 June 2005.
Midge Bodine Rossini, a summer resident of Williams Bay, was born Mildred Jean "Midge" Bain on Oct. 21, 1923, the daughter of Lewis Arthur and Edna Boegan Bain. Midge was a graduate of Oak Park High School and began a career in the visual arts while working as a stylist for Marshall Field & Co. in Chicago. During World War II, Midge served her country as a "Gray Lady," volunteering at a Chicago area military hospital. In 1946, Midge married Earl Clayton "Bud" Bodine of Oak Park, Ill., following his naval service in the Pacific Theater. Mr. and Mrs. Bodine made their homes in Northbrook, Ill., and Cedar Point Park in Williams Bay, where they raised their five children. During her time as a homemaker, Midge was very active in charities and civic organizations such as WAIF, Service Club and The Cradle, often appearing in Chicago society pages on behalf of local and international groups as a fashion model, organizer or spokeswoman. Midge and Bud purchased property in the Netherlands Antilles in 1965 and Midge became an owner, designer, builder and operator of the Oyster Pond Yacht Club and Captain's Quarters on the Caribbean islands of Saint Maarten and Saba, respectively. The hotels became important gathering places for celebrities and developers throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Bud and Midge divorced in 1976 and, in 1979 she married Giancarlo Rossini. The couple made their home in Chatham, Mass. Following Mr. Rossini's death in 1980, Midge relocated to Manhattan where she was involved in the Art Students' League and the Amateur Comedy Club. Pursuing her love of painting, Midge eventually returned to living on Saba, where she owned a small studio and sold her work. Moving to Savannah, Ga., in 1992, Midge continued painting in exotic locales around the world - from Bali to Venice - while restoring a Victorian brownstone, a frequent historic tour stop, and creating The Habersham at York Inn. Midge was predeceased by her two husbands, Bud, who died in 1982, and Giancarlo; and a brother, Lewis. She is survived by his widow Marion; as well as a brother, Bruce, and his wife, Pat; and brother Richard and his wife, Doris. Also surviving are her children, Clayton Bodine, Santa Barbara, Calif., Susan Bolea, Weston, Conn., Paul and Pegeen Bodine, Chicago, Christopher and Sarah Bodine, Dorset, England, and Dawn and Duffy Burdick, Clinton, N.Y., and may beloved nephews and nieces. Midge was also the proud grandmother of Hans Bodine and his wife, Jenn; Sebastien, Stefan and Remy Bolea; Victoria, Agnetta and Christian Bodine; and Carl, Niall and Evelyn Burdick. Throughout her life, Midge was regarded as a thoughtful and generous person whose aesthetic judgement brought gracious elegance to her homes and even the simplest family outings. She was beloved by her many dear friends in the arts and creative organizations to which she belonged and her civic pride and commitment were cherished in the communities that she helped enrich. Funeral arrangements are being made through Blake-Lamb of Chicago and memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.
