From Ronny Bodine:
Harold Jacob Bodine registered for the World War 1 draft on 12 Sept 1918 in Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. He reported he was born 22 Jan 1899, was a high school student, and his father, Commodore Bodine, was his nearest kin.
The Bradford Era (Bradford, Pa.) of 21 March 1921.
Berwick, Pa.. March 20. Mistaken for a burglar, Harold, 18 year old son of Councilman Commodore Bodine, was shot late last night and is dying in the Berwick hospital with a revolver bullet in a lung. He was accompanying Miss Margaret Smethers to her home and as he stepped around the corner of the house Guy Smethers, the girls' brother, fired at him. A man had been heard on the porch a moment before, and Smethers father had called for him to bring the revolver. Just as Smethers stepped on the porch, Bodine, with Miss Smethers, came in sight. Before he recognized him, Smethers fired.
Although reported as dying, he seems to have made a miraculous recovery as in April 1930 he lived in Berwick with his wife and daughter and in April 1940 lived with his family in Bloomsburg, Columbia working as a groundsman.
