Notes for: John Bodine, Jr.
From Ronny Bodine:
JOHN BODINE JR., of Slayton, Delaware, registered for the World War II Draft on 16 Feb 1942. He reported he was born 21 Sept 1901 in Denton, Maryland, worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and named Mrs. Jennie Collins [his sister] of Clayton, DE as his next of kin. He signed the registration as John Bodine Jr.
Year of birth: In 1910 his age was given as 8, in 1920 as 18, in 1930 as 28 and in 1940 as 38. In 1942 he stated he was born in 1901. All of these confirm that 1901 was the correct year and that 1900 as noted on his death certificate is in error.
In Jan 1920, John Bodine, age 18, lived with his parents in Kent County, Delaware. In 1930, he lived in Clayton, Kent County with his wife and son, working as a railroad laborer and in 1940 worked as a highway laborer in Kent County. Helen (Poore) Bodine was the daughter of Walter and Lena (Truitt) Poore.
From Kansas City Star (Kansas City, Mo.) of 21 May 1941.
Blackbird, Del., May 21.--The mother of seven children, Mrs. Helen Poore Bodine, 35, was accidentally shot and killed by her 5-year-old son last night while she held another child in her arms. Thomas Lamb, state police sergeant, said the boy pulled the trigger of a shotgun he thought was not loaded. The child in the mother's arms was not wounded, Lamb said.
