Notes for: James M. Bodine

This James Bodine is probably the brother of the John Bodine who married Ann Maria Trowbridge. James and John may be the sons of Peter Bodine, the son of John Bodine and Jane Marlatt. This theory needs more proof, though. We will put him and John as Peter's sons for now, but that is not absolutely certain.

Subject: sons of Peter Bodine of Warren County, OH???

Hello Dave and Ronny,

...

James Bodine born about 1832 OH
listed in Franklin, Warren, OH in 1850 and 1860
listed in Butler, Montgomery, OH in 1870
NOTE: I tried to double check this man in your records, but got lost in the listings
wife #1 - Elizabeth born 1837 OH
wife #2 - Jane born 1834 OH
children: Mary A., Martha, Joanna, James M., Belle, and Frank

IMPORTANT: Both of these men are listed together in Franklin, Warren, OH in the 1850 Census. They are both living in the household of John and Mary Galacpie - this is in fact John Gillespie and his spouse Mary Polly Elizabeth Bodine!!! Children: Denmore, William, Sarah J., John, Lydia, and Mary E. See the file attachment for this 1850 Census record.

This would certainly seem to indicate that there is a relationship between this John and James Bodine and Mary Bodine-Gillespie and/or John Gillespie --- the most probable relationship would be if these two men were in fact sons of Mary's brother, Peter. I think the odds are definitely in our favor for this particular family association. Please let me know what you might think. And please forgive me if you might already be aware of this information.

Respectfully yours,
Jan Bodine

Hello Dave and Ronny,

...

The James Bodine listed... is one of the boys listed in the household of John M. and Mary "Polly" Elizabeth Bodine-Gillespie in Franklin township of Warren County, Ohio in the 1850 Census. I am satisfied that the John Bodine who is listed there is in fact the John Bodine who married Ann Mariah Trowbridge and moved to St Joseph County, Indiana. But, I am still puttering around with trying to track where this James Bodine may have gone after the 1850 Census. I have requested a look-up for any court documents which may relate awarding custody of the young James and John Bodine to the Gillespies. Somewhere along the line I found two identical marriage dates which made me pretty excited about a family tie with the other Bodines - but I have put that someplace safe and have not relocated it just yet. I am still looking!

If we assume that these two young boys (James born 1829 OH and John born 1826 OH) are very probably grandsons of John Bodine (1765-1832) because this John Bodine family was the only Bodine family within Franklin township of Warren County around that time, then the possibilities for the identity of the father of these two boys are as follows:
1. Abraham 1788-1859 - NOT LIKELY - no evidence that he ever came to Warren County, OH, plus he would have been about age 40 at the time of the births of these two boys - not impossible, but not as probable as that of a younger candidate.

2. William 1793-1864 - NO - although William was married in 1816 and was of a more probable age to have been the father in question, he and his entire family were listed in Fountain County, Indiana by the 1830 Census - very doubtful that they left a couple of children behind.

3. John Joseph 1795-1846 - NO - he never left Berkeley, VA

4. Francis 1805-? - NOT LIKELY - we have found no evidence of this person within Warren County, OH - or anywhere else for that matter - perhaps he died young?

5. Peter 1801-before 1860 - VERY LIKELY - Peter was married in 1822, which is reasonably prior to the birth dates of these boys - Peter was listed in the 1830 Census with 3 young boys living right next to John Gillespie (more than likely Nancy's father) - and no trace of Peter can be properly identified in the 1840, 1850 or 1860 Census records, so I suspect that he and Nancy and one of the boys may have died together of Cholera or some other illness before 1840? And, there was a double family tie with the marriages between the Gillespies and Bodine brothers and sisters, so it might seem more likely that the other brother-sister couple would care for the orphans of their married siblings. Again - I suspect we might possibly learn a little more when I get a chance to go to Warren County and do some texture rubbings on the unidentified headstones in Franklin township - at least I certainly hope so.

Best Wishes, Jan
