Notes for: Jean C. Bodine
From Ronny Bodine:
1st marriage--1937--JOHN A. BECKER.
From Trenton (NJ) Evening Times of Sunday, 23 April 1939.
The Elkton, Md. elopement-marriage of a 16-year-old Central High School student almost two years ago to a Mercer Airport student-mechanic and her immediate separation after the wedding were revealed yesterday with the suicide-death near Pittsburgh of her estranged husband, 29-year-old John A. Becker.
Mrs. A. Albert Bodine of Ewing Avenue, West Trenton, revealed that her daughter, Jean, eloped November 19, 1937, while she was a junior at Central High School, with Becker, whose body was reported yesterday by the Associated Press to have been found slumped over the wheel of his car at New Kensington, Pa., with a rifle bullet in his head.
One of the two notes left on the steering wheel stated: "I am married to Jean Bodine, West Trenton, N.J. Whoever finds this please see that she gets a clipping of the newspaper." The second note asked forgiveness of his parents, John L. and Caroline Becker.
Becker, who resided at Titusville, while employed as an aviation student at Mercer Airport two years ago, was sought by Ewing Township police on a seduction charge the day he and Miss Bodine disappeared in 1937.
A checkup revealed that Becker married Miss Bodine the day after their disappearance and upon their return to Trenton, the couple separated and the seduction charge was withdrawn.
Becker was reported to have left Trenton for Buffalo and was not heard from since. Mrs. Bodine said annulment proceedings had never been instituted.
A native of Arnold, Pa., Becker's body was found in a wooded section off the highway at Braden Heights, near New Kensington. Deputy Coroner Bakes said he was informed that Becker had returned home several weeks ago from New York and had been despondent because of inability to find work.
Miss Bodine was graduated from Central High School last Summer.
