Walter J. Berdine, age 19, of Trivoli, Peoria County, Illinois, enlisted 15 Aug 1862 and was mustered in 27 Aug 1862 in Peoria County as a Private in Company B, 86th Illinois Infantry Regiment (USA). On 27 June 1864 he was wounded and captured while foraging and was later paroled. He was mustered out 24 June 1865 at Springfield, Illinois.

Mr. Walter J. Berdene AND Miss Alice M. Owens were married 18 May1879 by William H. Claggett, M.G.
1880 St. Louis, MO: Walter J. BERDINE 37 PA collector, Alice M. 26 KY wife.
From St. Louis, Missouri Will Book U, p. 543:
Last Will and Testament of Walter J. Berdine.
I Walter J. Berdine of the City of St. Louis Missouri do make publish and declare this my last will and testament.
I give, devise and bequeath to my wife Alice M. Berdine all of the property real or personal, wherever situated belonging to me at the time of my death.
I make constitute and appoint my said wife sole executrix of this my last will, and request that she be not required to give bond.
Witness my hand and seal this 23rd day of October 1890. /s/ Walter J. Berdine
Probate on 22 Dec 1890 records his death as 18 December 1890. His widow was appointed to administer the estate.
The death of Walter Berdine on 18 Dec 1890 at age 48 of heart disease, a traveling salesman, was recorded in the death records of St. Louis, Missouri. He was buried in Wesleyan Cemetery.

BERDINE--W. J. Berdine, beloved husband of Alice Owens Berdine, at his residence, Thursday, Dec. 18, 1890. Funeral from the residence of his brother-in-law Mr. J. Kendrick, 4120 Page avenue, Saturday, Dec. 20, 1890. All friends invited.
The probate records for Walter J. Berdine contain the following handwritten document:
"After hunting for Alice M. Berdine at Morgan Str. in vain and searching for her in 6-7 temples of Venus with and without saloon attachments I traced her to 2121 Chestnut St. where she and several handsome cyprians await and receive the assisting attentions of "those of the male sex." She says she has no report to make but asked me to inform her attorney, Mr. Holmes, of this citation which has been done. She goes by the name of Alice M. Blair. /s/ Edw. C. Winter, Dep. Sheriff
On 28 July 1892, the St. Louis Probate Clerk directed the Sheriff to deliver a summons to Mrs. Berdine directing her to appear on 16 Sept 1892 and deliver her accounts, which write was delivered to Mrs. Berdine by Dep. Sheriff Winter on 1 Sept 1892. Mrs. Berdine complied with the order and submitted her account which was accepted by the probate court.
On Nov 1894, Alice M. Berdine filed for a widow's pension which was issued to her under certificate no. 411678.
The 1901 St. Louis, Missouri City Directory lists Alice Berdine, widow of Walter, residing at 3907 Morgan.
Alice Berdine married Capt. John W. Collins who died in DeSoto, Jefferson County, Missouri in 1913 and was named in his brief newspaper obituary in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
From her Missouri Death Certificate: Alice Owens Collins, widow of Capt. John W. Collins, daughter of Elias & Sidney (Smith) Owens, was born 27 Oct 1850 in Louisville, Kentucky and died 21 April 1939 in St. Louis. She was cremated at Valhalla Crematory and Cemetery in St. Louis. Informant was Claire O. Kennett of Westminster.
