KINSTON -Herbert W. Bodine, 88, of Kinston, N.C. passed away on May 11, 2012, at his daughter's home in Newfield, N.J. Mr. Bodine was born in Boston, Mass. to the late Carl and Rosa Bodine. He was raised in Gothenburg, Sweden and returned to the United States in 1940. He was a longtime resident of Dedham, Mass. prior to moving to Kinston, N.C. Mr. Bodine was a tool and die maker and manufacturing engineer for Farrington Manufacturing and Electronics in Massachusetts and Virginia prior to joining Ray-O-Vac Corporation in Clinton, Mass. He retired in 1988. Mr. Bodine is survived by Mary, his wife of 69 years; son Steven and his wife Peg, of North Brookfield, Mass.; daughter Karin and her husband Roger, of Newfield, N.J; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his sister Laila Hogg of Eastham, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Bill, his grandson Derek, and his brother Nils (Roland). He served in the United States Navy Seabees' 87th Battalion during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in the South Pacific. Mr. Bodine was an avid reader and devotee of word puzzles. He enjoyed traveling back to Sweden to visit family and friends. He also loved singing, playing, and listening to fine music. He always looked forward to annual family visits to Topsail Beach, N.C. Funeral services will be private.
