Notes for: Cornelius Bodine

His son Isaac N. Bodine, listed in the 1880 Census of Nelson Co., KY, says his father was born in Virginia and his mother in Kentucky. It looks like some of his other siblings may have been born in Kentucky, but I am still looking into this.

Grave of Cornelius and Gillwater (Robertson) Bodine

This stone was erected in the 1980's or 1990's in the graveyard at Beech Fork United Methodist Church in Bloomfield, Kentucky by (I guess) some of the descendants of Cornelius Bodine. The dates for Gilly are "b. 1793, d. 1869." The inscription says, "They owned the land around this cemetery. Many descendants buried here." The church appears in the picture below. The cemetery is right next to the church.

Cornelius and Gillwater were married by J. Ferguson.

The following was extracted from the "Kentucky Genealogist," v. 5, 1963, pages. 123-129. It was then arranged by family (by Rudie Slaughter?). Information in parentheses was added by the people who submitted the article to the "Kentucky Genealogist" in order to make some things clearer.

Will of Cornelius Bodine, son of Isaac A. Nelson Co. KY Will Book (?) p. 522 (extracted).

Will of Cornelius Bodine "weak in body" asks that just debts be paid first by selling such of the stock and loose property as will discharge them, and then gives to beloved wife Gilly Bodine all the balance of the estate, both real and personal, during widowhood, allowing her full liberty to give to any of the children after they come of age or marry such part as she can conveniently spare and if she thinks they are in need of it, but not more than their proportional share to each. If she should marry, she is to have one-third of the estate during her life, and at her death, the same to be equally divided among all the children. The other two-thirds to be equally divided among the children when she should marry. If any of the slaves should not be dutiful, she can hire them out to the best advantage. Appoints brother Asher Bodine and Andrew Briggs as executors. April 18, 1823. William M. Foster and William Paddock witnesses. Probated May 18, 1823. Asher Bodine qualified as executor and entered into bond of $15,000 with Joseph Ray, William M. Foster, and Redmon Grigsby as his sureties.
