Hello Dave and Peter....nice to hear from you. My maternal grandparents were James Russell and Mary Scott, both of Carluke, Scotland. They had eleven children, including my mother, Agnes Scott Russell (always called Nan or Nancy) who worked as a young girl at the Jam Factory you reference. She became a nurse with the British Army during WW One. James Russell owned the draper and greengrocer shops in Carluke and was an avid gardener. Almost alll the Russells emigrated to Oshawa, Ont. Canada after the War.

Mary Scott (b 1858?) was the daughter of Thomas Scott and Jane Lawson. Thomas was a "cow feeder" or ostler and mine worker. Mary was the grandaughter of Robert Lowrie (Laurie). Tom and Jane Scott lived in a small cottage on Planking's End. (Where the wooden sidewalk ended).

My notes show that the Jam Factory opened in the 1850's when the railroad opened running from Edinburgh through Carluke to the West Coast which made shipping easier and more profitable. By 1859, Carluke boasted 6000 inhabitants - most of whom worked in the mines or the jam factory. (They made strawberry jam in addition to marmalade).

Hope this helps. All good wishes...audrey windsor (Bodine) Bergner
