Notes for: Albert Leslie Bodine

In 1905, Albert L. Bodine and Elizabeth H. W. Bodine look to be lodging in the home of a Mary M. Jones and her son Franklin R. Jones. Albert and Elizabeth are only 17 and 15 years old each. It does not say they are married, but that is not a line on this census. From the 1910 Census in Camden, we know they are man and wife. All of their parents are born in NJ.

In the 1910 Census of Camden, NJ Ward 10, we find Albert's father and mother rooming with that same family where Albert was in 1905. There Franklin P. Jones and his wife Theodosia L. Jones are again with Theodosia's mother, Elizabeth H. Atkinson (age 83 NJ), and Theodosia's sister, Elizabeth H. Atkinson. So there is some connection between Franklin Jones and the Bodine family where they can room there when they are in need. Albert did have a great-uncle who was married to a Beulah Atkinson. From some quick checking, I do think that Beulah was related somehow to this Franklin Jones and Theodosia (Atkinson) Jones family. Maybe something like a great-aunt or so.

In the 1910 Census, it is Albert L. Bodine and "Elizabeth H. W. J. Bodine." All parents are born in NJ. Since I doubt Elizabeth had three middle initials, I wonder if the "J" isn't for "Jones" based on the people in the 1905 and 1910 Censuses mentioned further above.

Dave,

I pulled out all the stops and reexamined all the records. My conclusion is that Elizabeth H. W. J. ----- and Emma Elizabeth Carpenter are two different women. I found no original record that linked the Carpenter name to Elizabeth H. W. J.

So, Albert L. & Elizabeth were married 1905 as per the 1910 census which stated they were married 5 years and had a son, Albert F. age 4.

Albert & Elizabeth Bodine are listed in the 1910 Cemden city directory and The Morning Post of Camden of 9 Feb 1910 reported that Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bodine of Camden attended a party.

By 5 June 1917, Albert Leslie Bodine registered for WW1 Draft in Philadelphia.

Meanwhile...

In June 1905 Emma E. Carpenter, born July 1890, lived with her parents George & Martha Carpenter in Mount Holly and married Howard Ellis Applegate on 6 July 1908 as Emma Elizabeth Carpenter. In June 1915 the couple was living in Burlington and her birth was given as July 1890. Both were baptized as adults on 28 April 1916 in Camden. Howard died 1923 and on 2 Feb 1924 Emma E. Applegate married Ferdinand M. Bodine in Hainesport, NJ.

Note that one set of records calls Albert's wife Elizabeth and the other "contender" is always Emma E.

I think the confusion comes from some one posting the name of Carpenter to Albert's wife and this has been picked up at Ancestry and has linked the two together. Emma Carpenter Applegate Bodine was buried in Brotherhood Cemetery where her Applegate husband is and her parents.
