Notes for: Abraham ("Abram") Bodine, Jr.

We are assuming this Abraham Bodine is the son of John B. Bodine and Sarah Bodine (an actual Bodine herself). This needs more proof, but it does look pretty sure now. This is the Abraham Bodine, Jr. mentioned in his grandfather Cornelius Bodine's will. One strike against this is that Abraham, in the 1880 Census of Onondaga Co., NY, says his father was born in NY. John B. Bodine, on the other hand, was born in PA. Another strike is that in one set of guardianship papers, this Abraham Jr. was listed as the son of an Abraham Sr. Here is a message about that:

I have seen that. I have a copy of it actually...

It does list Abraham Jr's father as Abraham Sr. However, if you look at Cornelius' will (d 1821/2), the father of Sarah/Sally... it says that Abraham Jr is the son of "my deceased daughter" and John B Bodine. And if you look at the guardianship papers for Hannah, David, Abraham Jr, etc, John B states that Abraham is his son and is entitled to property from his mother's estate (Sally).

...

I asked the historian about it, and she said that it was probably assumed and that the person who did it probably didn't really know what was going on with the families he provided the information for.

Information on his wife and children first came from FamilySearch.com. They are all described as being "of Cayuga, NY." There is an Abram Bodine from New York listed in the Civil War Pension Index at Ancestry.com. His widow was Hannah Bodine.

I bet this is the same Abraham Bodine listed in the 1860 Census of Cayuga Co., NY and in the 1880 Census of Skaneateles, Onondaga Co., NY. In 1880, he is 60 and born in NY. Both his parents were born in NY as well. He works in a cemetery. His wife is Hannah. She is 58 and born in NY. Her father was born in CT and her mother in NY. One son is listed, William. He is 20 and born in NY. He is listed as "at home."

Abram BODINE Self M Male W 60 NY Works In Cemetery NY NY
Hannah BODINE Wife M Female W 58 NY Keeps House CT NY
William BODINE Son S Male W 20 NY At Home NY NY

Source Information: 1880 Census, Skaneateles, Onondaga, New York.

In the 1870 Census of Skaneateles, Onondaga County, New York, Abram is listed as being 40 and Hannah as being 48. The 40 must be a mistake. He would have been 50. There is a John Ammock listed next after Hannah. He is 79 and born in NY. I wonder if that isn't Hannah's father. The census does not say. And William is next. He is 10 and born in NY. The census doesn't say William is Abram's son, but he must be. That information is not pointed out on that census. The name Ammock seems to be another spelling of Ammack and is a Dutch name. There were some Ammocks and Ammacks in the area.

I found a John Aumock in the 1880 Census of Niles. He seems to be listed as John Ammock in the Auburn city directory of 1883-1884 (see Fulton County History web site). That John is 48 (NY, NY, NY). His wife is Hannah Aucmock (NY, PA, NY) and his mother-in-law is the widow Katy Gravis (83, NY, NY, NY). This could be Hannah Bodine's brother. Jessica sent me info from the 1850 Census of Niles on a John Ammock who lived next to Abraham and Hannah. He was 59, his wife Laura 55, daughter Adelia 15 and daughter (?) Jeannette 21. All were born NY. John would have been born about 1791. That would be old enough to be Hannah's father.

There is an article in the Auburn (Cayuga Co., NY) Weekly News and Democrat of Thursday, October 18, 1888 about an old Dutch Bible that belonged to an Abraham Bodine. I think it must be this Abraham Bodine. The article says this:
The Ladies Church Aid Society of the Reformed church held its annual fair and festival on Wednesday afternoon and evening, the 10th last. It was successful financially, socially and in every respect. Through the kindness of the Osborne M'f'g Co., a large tent was pitched on the church lawn, and beneath this was to be seen a fine display of fancy work, fruits, grain, and vegetables. In these departments the society might compete with some of our larger societies. In the antique corner were quite a number of ancient and interesting exhibits, two of which were especially attractive, being Dutch Bibles, printed in Holland, one in 1740, the property of Mrs. Prudence Parsell, the other in 1744, the property of Abraham Bodine. Though ours is a Dutch church no one could readily read these Bibles.

This Abraham Bodine's great-great-grandfather had the following in his will:
All of Abraham's children were living at the time his will was written on June 14, 1769. It was proven on July 3, 1769. It leaves to his wife "all that money given her by her father," with the use of his "whole estate, real and personal, during her natural life or re-marriage," (sic) or until Cornelius should become of age, when he was to inherit the real estate; John was to have fifty pounds, and each of his daughters twenty-five pounds. His wife was to have also his Dutch Bible, a bed and bedding, the best cupboard, etc. His personal property was to be divided equally among all his children. This info comes from page 522 of History of the West Branch Valley.

This is probably the same Dutch Bible mentioned in the above records. It may be the original Dutch Bible of the Bodine family.

Hello all, I have come across a 1860 Census record for Niles, NY that lists an Abraham as 40, his wife Harriet as 38, and two daughters, Jeanette and Alice (13 and 12 respectively). I believe this is the Janet Bodine that married Adelbert DeVoe from Owasco. (Janet died in 1928, obit can be found on fultonhistory.com search "Janet Bodine: exact").

If anyone can confirm this, please reply to this message.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: [BODINE] Some new names

Hi, I'm new to the list and am hoping someone can help me make a connection:

I have Janet Bodine marrying Adelbert DeVoe, they are the parents of my mother's grandfather.

I am interested in Janet, obviously.

The Census records that I have found that have Janet living with her parents (I believe they are her parents because of her age listed and that of the information found in her obit)

Niles, NY: Moravia PO 1860
Abraham age 40, Hannah age 38, Jeanette age 13, and Alice age 12.

Niles, NY 1855
Abram age 33, Hannah age 32, Jenett age 8, Alice age 6, Francis(?) A age 3, and John J age 6 mos. There is also a servant by the name of William Hall living in the home.
Note from Dave: Jessica later said they were all born in Cayuga County, NY. William Hall was 36 and born in England. Jessica is sure the census said John J. Bodine was one month old (1/12). That census was taken June 8, 1855.

Niles, NY 1850 (Next to Cornelius Bodine)
Abram age 29, Hanah age 28, Jenette age 4, Alice age 2, and Laura age 1

Janet's obit appeared in the Auburn, NY paper Sept 7, 1928 and is transcribed as follows:
Mrs Janet Bodine DeVoe, widow of Adelbert DeVoe, died last evening following an illness of several years. She was 83 years of age. Mrs. DeVoe was born in Niles, but had lived in Owasco for many years.

She is survived by three sons, Chester A and Dorr of Auburn, and Charles DeVoe of Canoga; three daughters, Mrs Burt Shorkey, Mrs Cecil N Pearce of Syracuse, and Mrs William Marquart of Auburn; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Tallman-Walker Undertaking Establishment, 47 Clark St at 3:30 Sunday afternoon. Rev M J Remejo, Pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church at Owasco will officiate. Internment will be in Owasco Rural Cemetery.

I have no furthur information on Janet, other than her parents might be Abraham and Hannah of Niles. I have found some references to numerous Abrahams, and a few Hannahs in wills and such, but cannot connect for sure.

I did find a mention of her and Adelbert in John M Bodine's legal action against Hannah Matoon and numerous amounts of other people in 1897, but I did not find Janet mentioned in Catherine's will (who died Nov 17, 1896), so I have no idea how she would be related, nor is there mention of relation in the summons she is listed in.

If anyone out there can help, please reply as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance
Jessica

Thank you for your reply. I have visited your page several times looking for a connection and cannot find one. I do think that John M is Abraham's father, but after looking at your page, the locations and dates do not seem right. My Abraham was born about 1820 and married Hannah UNK who was later committed to the Willard State Hospital by her son-in-law Adelbert DeVoe in/around 1895. She later died in 1896 in Ovid at the Willard Hospital.

I have looked at wills that I have found in Auburn, there are many Cornelius', but the only one I have found that mentions an Abraham, grandson, son of John M and Sarah is the one you are talking about, will dated 1821, probated Feb 6, 1822. However, there are many Abrahams that I have found in the area, so I cannot be sure this is the one I am looking for.

In that will, Abraham would have been about 2, and it lists that one of his parents are deceased (I can't remember which one and I didn't write it down...) Whom would he have lived with?

Anyhow, I do not have all of my resources available to me at the moment so I cannot tell you more of what I have found.

All I know is that they are from Niles, NY and they might have moved to Owasco, NY after the marraige of Janet to Adelbert DeVoe.

Have a good one,
Jessica

There is a short article in the Cayuga County Independent (Auburn, NY) from Friday, May 15, 1896 that says this:
Mrs. Hannah Bodine of Owasco, has been committed to Willard asylum at Ovid by Judge Underwood. Mrs. Bodine is 74 years old. Four weeks ago she was attacked with the notion that the world was against her. She has tried on several occasions to commit suicide by cutting her throat and with poison. Adelbert Devoe, her son, made the application.

Thank you for adding my line, as far as you've got it. I did find some new information at the Records office: Surrogate's records. I don't have all my papers with me, but I do have a notebook with some notes...

Abraham Bodine d Oct 7, 1851, Niles
to my youngest son: Cornelius... (I really couldn't read the rest...)
Other sons and daughters are: Sally, Polly, Martina, John Bernard (John B!), and Thomas.
He left no widow.

John B Bodine d Niles March 21, 1859, no widow, no will
Abram Bodine, Sally Ann Brokaw, Olive O. Bodine, Harriet F Covert (Wife of William E)

...

I found this is the Historian's office: Olive Ordell Bodine, d Niles June 12 age abt 21. Auburn Daily Advertiser June 16, 1860.

What is also interesting, if you look at the history of the Deveaux/DeVoe family, they too followed the DRC church up from NYC... Elijah DeVoe, the one that married Elizabeth Gonzales, went up to Ulster Co, wrote his dad, Thomas, and Thomas followed... Elijah and Benjamin (Benjamin is my direct ancestor) ended up in Owasco... see my update at mutantslug.com/armstrong/Devoe

Hope this helps a bit. Thanks again,

Jessica

His guardianship was granted the same day.

When I looked at Abraham's age again, it's got "age of 10...June instant" meaning he must have turned 10 right before John B wrote the letter. Like I said, if you look at the census records, he would have been born either 1819 or 1820, and if he turned 10 in 1829, then his birth date must have been June 1819.
