Notes for: Charles W. Bodine

I believe this Charles is listed in the 1850 Census of Kingwood Township in Hunterdon County (p. 149). He was three years old and living with a Delilah Rittenhouse (age 72). This is probably Delilah Bray Rittenhouse, wife of Jonathan Rittenhouse.

I am sure that this Charles W. Bodine is the same as the Charles W. Bodine who married 1) Hannah Shadinger and 2) Jennie __________. This is only an educated guess right now, but it looks very, very likely. They were both born about 1847 according to the different censuses and both had parents from New Jersey. Charles W. Bodine, married to a Jennie and with children Lewis and Howard, is found in the 1880 Census of Stockton, Hunterdon Co., NJ. He is living right next to a John E. Bodine. John is very likely the brother of the Charles W. Bodine who is the son of William H. Bodine. According to the 1880 Census, John was born about 1843, the same year that John Bodine, son of William and Delilah was born. It is a guess, but I'm going with that theory for now.

One way to check this would be to see if William H. Bodine had a will and to see who is mentioned in it.

I am only guessing that the Benjamin R. Bodine born to a Charles W. Bodine and his wife ? Hunt belongs to this family. I did not have Margaret Jane's last name, but I'm guessing now that it was Hunt based on this birth info. All of this needs to be checked and confirmed. I later found another birth record for Essie which gave the mother's name as Margaret J. Hunt. That seems to confirm my guess.

Here is something from a newspaper in Hunterdon Co., NJ:

Hunterdon County, New Jersey Democrat, Dec. 7, 1870, Vol. XXXIII, No. 16 (1732):

Nov. 30th, 1870, near Centre Bridge, Pa., by the same, Chas. W. Bodine, to Hannah R., daughter of Tobias Shadinger, all of Bucks Co., Pa.

There is a Hannah Bodine, wife of Charles W. Bodine, buried in the Sandy Ridge Baptist Cemetery near Stockton, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Many other members of this Bodine line are buried there, too. Hannah died April 24, 1874 at age 30.

Here is something that was sent to me from the card files at the Hunterdon County Historical Society:

Bodine Reunion 1909 at Island Park, near Easton, Pa. through the efforts of J. V. Bodine.
Those present were: Jane Bodine, Miss Carrie Bodine, Miss Lucy Bodine (Sandy Ridge ), Mrs. Lewis Bodine of Englishtown, Mr. & Mrs Walt Bodine of Philadelphia, Mr. & Mrs. Howard Bodine -- Grandson of Howard Bodine, Trenton, NJ.

Note: These people may be related to Charles W. Bodine (husband of Hannah Shadinger). The Howard Bodine may be his son. If so, this tells me that Howard would be the grandson of William H. Bodine and that the "H" stands for "Howard." This is only a guess however. Here are my guesses as to who else was there: Mr & Mrs Walt Bodine could be Charles "W." Bodine (husband of H. Shadinger). Maybe the "W" stands for "Walter." Mrs. Lewis Bodine is the wife of Charles's son, Lewis. Carrie and Jane would be daughters of William H. Bodine. I'm not sure who Lucy or J. V. Bodine are.

Hi Dave:

...

About the only other thing I can add is from the Parker-Willett bible, in which a notation was made that Nellie Eva Bodine, Lewis Paxon Bodine's first wife, died April 14, 1919, Sometime after that, Lewis married a "Tillie" or Matilda.

In answer to your earlier question, when I went back into the early census records on Ancestry.com, it shows Hannah Shadinger being born in PA.

Keep in touch !

Best wishes, Walt B

When I look up Hannah Shadinger, it comes up Shaddinger, born 1849, orig. from Plumstead, Bucks County.

Looking at the info above, my guess is that Hannah, Charles's first wife, had died some time before 1880. She would have been the mother of both Lewis and Howard since Jennie would have been too young to have given birth to either one.

From Ronny Bodine:

Charles Bodine lived 1880 in Stockton, Hunterdon County with his wife and 2 sons. He worked there as a laborer. In 1900, he worked in Stockton where he engaged in farming. He reported that in 23 years of marriage his wife had borne 3 children of whom 2 were then living. In 1910, the family still lived in Delaware Township. Charles now reported that Jane M. Bodine was his 2nd wife to whom he had been married 33 years. In 1920, Charles W. Bodine, age 72 and his wife Jennie, age 60, lived in Delaware County engaged in farming. Living with the family was their daughter Essie, her husband and children.

The State of Pennsylvania Certificate of death for their daughter, Mrs. Essie Keown, names her parents as Charles W. Bodine and Jane Hunt. The informant was their son, Edward Keown, of Rosemont, NJ. In 1870 and 1880, Margaret Hunt, age 11 (1870) and 20 (1880), was living with her parents, Patrick and Mary Hunt, in Lambertville, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. This would indicate the number of years Charles and Jane Bodine were married-23-reported in 1900 is incorrect and should probably have read 13.
