Obituary, The Decatur (Ill.) Herald of 14 March 1923.
Frank F. Bowman, assistant yardmaster for the Wabash, died in Employes' hospital Tuesday night at 9: 25 o'clock of pneumonia. The announcement of his death was a surprise to his acquaintenances to whom there had come no intimation that he was alarmingly ill. He went to the hospital last Sunday. That did not surprise his friends, for during the last 12 months he had not been in robust health and several times had been in the hospital for short periods. Frank Bowman had been an employe of the Wabash, serving as a switchman for many years. That was practically the only work that he had ever done. The major portion of that service had been as one of the assistant yardmasters. His many years of continuous service with the Wabash is the best testimony that could be offered in commendation with his faithful service. Frank Bowman was born in Joliet, July 8, 1860. He had been a resident of Decatur the greater part of his life. He leaves his wife, Ida Bowman; his daughter, Mrs. C. J. Vail, and his son, Glenn Bowman; also he leaves the following named brothers and sisters: Joseph, William, James and Anthony Bowman and Mrs. C. A. Myers, all of Decatur; Mrs. Emma Fahay, Long Beach, Cal.; John Bowman, Kansas City., Mo.; and Mrs. Clara Veech, Oakley. The body was taken to the rooms of Moran & Sons. The time of the funeral has not been determined. [Note: His obituary gives his birth date as 8 July 1860 and his grave marker as 1860. The 1870 census records his age as 11 [= 1859], the 1880 census as 21 [= 1859] and in 1900 he was born July 1859. But in 1860 when he should have been 1 he is not listed.]
