Notes for: William Bodine
From Ronny Bodine:
William Bodine, age 7 in 1880, lived with his parents. In 1900, William and Emma Bodine lived with Emma's parents, Lorenzo and Emma Barr, in Newark, Essex County where William worked as a truck driver. The couple had only been married a year and reported no children. Both of their exact birth dates were recorded by the census taker. Yet, when William Bodine applied for a SSN in November 1936, he stated he was born 3 Nov 1872 in Virginia to Joseph and Christian (Miller) Bodine. For some reason he applied again in December 1936, gave the same details and was issued a second SSN.
1st marriage--1898--EMMA ELIZABETH BARR.

In 1910, Emma Powers, 38 MA, lived in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. She was married, but apparenty separated from her husband William. Three of their children lived with her. In 1900, the family had lived in Catskill, Greene County, New York. In 1880, Emma L. Hankinson 8 MA, lived with her parents Henry M. & Emma Hankinson, in Catskill, Greene County, New York. Massachusetts Birth Records list Emma Lucy Hankinson's birth on 24 Oct 1871 in Holyoke, dau. of Henry and Emma (O'Neill) Hankinson.
1915 Newark, Essex Co., NJ: William BODINE b. Sept 1874 VA, Emma L., b. Oct 1874 MA, Geo. W. b. Aug 1908 NJ, Catherne B. POWERS b. Dec 1901 NY.
1940 South Orange, Essex Co., NJ: William BODINE 67 VA salesman, Emma 67 MA wife, PARKER, Mary F. 21 step-dau. Residence 1 April 1935: Newark, NJ.
It seems clear that William Bodine was married twice, with both wives named Emma. The first wife was born in New Jersey and her exact birth date was recorded in the 1900 census as 8 Feb 1879 in New Jersey. The second wife appears in the 1915 New Jersey state census as born in October 1874 in Massachusetts. Further, in 1940 his family included a 21-year-old stepdaughter who must have been the child of his second wife by a previous marriage. Strangely, William Bodine does not appear in the 1905 New Jersey state census, nor in the 1920 and 1930 Fderal censuses. Also, in 1940, there was only one William Bodine living in Essex County and so he may be identical with the William Bodine who had an estate administration in Essex County in 1946 (Docket No. 5848-G) which is here assumed until proven otherwise.
