Notes for: Thomas Bodine

I had wondered if this Thomas wasn't a son of Abraham Bodine, the son of Jacob Bodine, Sr. of Columbia County, Pennsylvania. Now that I've seen the info from the 1850 Census of Hardin County, Ohio, I would doubt that he was. Thomas was born about 1799 according to that census which would make Abraham be about 18 when Thomas was born. I doubt that was true since 18 was pretty young to be a father back in those days.

There is an Abram Bodine who bought some land in Ohio near Thomas. That Abram could have been Thomas' brother or other near relative. Here is some info on him:

Wyandot Co., Ohio 1845 - land purchase by Abram Bodine of Livingston County, New York on May 28, 1835. The item was not recorded until December 25, 1889. (The land was in Bucyrus, Ohio which is now in Crawford Co., Ohio.) The documentation is volume 45, page 80 in Wyandot Co., Ohio at Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

Besides the names of Thomas and his children mentioned in the 1850 Census of Hardin Co., Ohio, there is also a Betsy Bodine in his household. She must be a niece. She was 23 and born in New York.

Joan Best sent me the info below about this Thomas:

This Thomas is probably the Thomas Bodine found in Mt. Morris Twp., Livingston Co., NY. In the 1830 Census there is one male under 5 (Abram), 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40 (Thomas), 1 female 20-30 (wife of Thomas), 1 female 60-70 (prob. mother of either Thomas or his wife)...

In the same township in 1830 is John Bodine between 20-30 and his young family, probably Thomas' brother. John is in the 1850 census age 49, wife Mary, kids, John was born in PA. I think this is the Bodine family that stayed in Livingston Co. through the later half of the 1800s. I think the Abram that went to Michigan (married to Philinda) was from this family also; he was 43 in 1850.

So we have Thomas, John, Abram, probably brothers, born in PA. The likely father is John Bodine found in Cayuga Co., NY in 1810 with 3 sons under 10 and one 16-26. These names are repeated in the family in Ohio.

End of info from Joan Best.

Here is the census info for the John Bodine from Cayuga County mentioned above. It is from the 1810 Census of Cayuga Co., NY: "3,-,1,1,-,1,2,-,1,-,-". This means John's family consisted of 3 males under 10, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45 and 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 26-45.

3 males under 10: John, age 9; Gilbert, 5; Abraham, 2.
1 male 16-26: Unknown. See below.
1 male 26-45: John, 35.
1 female under 10: Mariah, 7.
2 females 10-16: Ann, 13; Elizabeth, 11.
1 female 26-45: Tiney, 34.

This shows that there could be a child that we know nothing about. It might be possible that the missing son is this Thomas Bodine, but that is only a guess. If Thomas were 51 in 1850, this means he could have been born no earlier than 1798. The male mentioned in the census between 16 and 26 years of age would have been born no later than 1795. Of course mistakes are made on the censuses, but if we just go by what is in the 1810 and 1850 censuses, then Thomas would not have been one of John's children.

If so, this does mean that either we don't know the name of one of John and Tiney's children or that the male 16-26 was just living with them and was not immediate family.

Subject: abram bodine......1835

Hi Joan,

I just got on and checked the Rootsweb site and saw a reply from you! I am thrilled! Abraham's father is Thomas Bodine. Thomas Bodine is listed in the Census of 1790 New York. The following info is there: male under 5: 1, male between 10-15: 1, female between 20-30: 1, males between 30-40: 1, male between 60-70: 1, females between 60-70: 1. They were listed in the Ulster Co., New York. Thomas is listed in the 1840 Ohio Census in Hardin County @ Dudley Twp. There are no Bodine's listed in the 1840 census in Hardin County. So I believe that they came between 1840 and 1850. In the 1870 census Abram is listed as age 42, male, white, birthplace as New York, residency is Hardin County in Dudley Twp., Ohio. Thomas died in Hardin Co, Ohio in 1854 six years after marrying his 2nd wife: Eliza Marsh. They married in Wyandot Co., Ohio on January 11, 1848. But the plot only thickens because I have a Thomas Bodine listed above in the 1790 census. I have another Thomas Bodine listed in the 1830 Census in NY as being 31 years of age which made him being born about 1799. So if you can help; please let me know.

Another interesting twist in this is: in June 2, 1880 Census.....there is another Abram Bodine listed in Hardin Co, Pleasant Twp., Ohio. He was 25 years of age. His wife is Lida A. Bodine also aged 25. They have a daughter named Elizabeth Bodine age 4. It states that Lida's parents were both born in New York and that Abram's parents were both born in Ohio.

I am sorry if I've given you too much info. I just excited when I start working on this stuff. Any info you can lend; I would appreciate!

Thanks!

...I will list below the info that I have that is documented. If I have done it incorrectly; please let me know. I have researched MUCH info on the Thomas Bodine family as I am sure he is Mike's gr gr gr gr grandfather. Here we go:

In the will of Thomas Bodine, there is a document item#31 dated April 13th, 1852 in Hardin Co., Ohio between Thomas and Abram Bodine with a man named H Woodworth. It is about buying ewes and lambs etc. On the 3rd line of the document; it states that Thomas Bodine and son are contracting this agreement. Thomas and Abram both signed it.

Thomas Bodine will -- May 26th, 1854..Thomas Bodine signed a note for something that he would pay for within 7 months.

Thomas Bodine will --- dated September 11, 1854......it states that a $5000 bond was given in and for the children of Thomas Bodine.....the children listed are: John Bodine..age 20 years in Oct. 1854, Margaret Bodine..age 14 years in Oct. 1854, Harriet Bodine..age 12 years in Sept. 1854 and Mary Bodine..age 9 years on 4th of March 1855..Minor children of Thomas Bodine, deceased. The document was signed by Albert Dean, Spear Hasting and John Hasting. (***another side note**..Mary & John were both listed as 'insane' people in lots of other documents. That's why they had guardians even later in their lives.)

Thomas Bodine will----dated September 11, 1854......document #136 signed by the administrators of Thomas Bodine, deceased. ALL of Thomas Children were listed including: Abram Bodine, John Bodine, Ann Bodine, Margaret Bodine, Harriet Bodine and Mary Bodine. ** I can't clearly read the bottom of the document but that something was taking place on October 1, 1854.**

Wyandot County, Ohio Marriage --- Thomas Bodine & Eliza Marsh were issued a license on January 5, 1848. They were married January 11, 1848 by H. Campbell. Thomas age was listed as over 21. Eliza's age was listed as over 18. Neither of them had any spouses living. So with the info listed above in the children's ages.....we know that Thomas had to have been married because John was born in 1834. So just a wild guess here....but I believe that Thomas was possibly born in about 1815 or before.

Another interesting item in the will of Thomas.......From the estate of Thomas Bodine, deceased to Henry Haine Jr. for mileage in attending as a witness in care of Thomas and Eliza Bodine in October 1852 in Hardin County, Ohio. So we know that this is indeed the Thomas and Eliza listed above from Wyandot Co., Ohio.

Mary Bodine....Thomas daughter died before December 27, 1898. I have an Administrator's Bond for her about being deceased.

Wyandot Co, Ohio 1845--- land purchase by Abram Bodine of Livingston County,New York on May 28, 1835. The item was not recorded until December 25, 1889. ***(The land was in Bucyrus Ohio which is now in Crawford Co., Ohio.)***. The documentation is Volume 45 Page 80 in Wyandot Co. Ohio at Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

Now if you can stand more info; Abraham Bodine died in Hardin Co., Ohio in April 1873. He was listed in the 1860 Hardin Co, Ohio census as being married to Mary, age 32. Abram was listed as 33. He had children listed as: Amos, 6; Sally Jane, 4; David A.(Amos),1; John 26(his insane brother), Harriet 17 (his minor sister); Mary L. 15 (his insane sister) *please note; the sister and brother notations were added by me....the rest are as it appears on the census report.**

Well Dave, I know I have given you lots of info to chew on etc. I hope it isn't too much. I just really enjoy this wonderful world of genealogy. But there are so many Thomas and Abraham (abram) Bodines......it's hard to tell who is who........that's why I have given as much detail as I possibly can to document that I have the right family for my Mike's family. **One more note, There was an Abram Bodine that was listed in the 1880 Hardin Co. Ohio census as being 25 years of age with a wife named Lida, also 25 yrs of age and a daughter who was 4. Her family was from New York but his was listed as Ohio. Any ideas on who this fella might have been or who his parents were? Let me know your thoughts or proof etc.

Thanks for taking the time to read all this lengthy stuff. Have a good day!

Debbie Bodine

The following may or may not apply to this Thomas Bodine. Joan Best sent me the following. She found it at "www.heritagepursuit.com".

From Ronny Bodine:

Thomas Bodine moved from New York to Ohio between 1838, when his daughter Margaret was born in New York and 1840, when he appears living in Dudley Township, Hardin County, Ohio. In 1840, he served as one of two trustees for Dudley Township. In June 1850, Thos. Bodine, 51, farmer, lived in Dudley Township, Hardin County with his children--Abram 23, John 16, Ann 14, Margaret 12, Harriet 7, Mary 5.

Thomas Bodine will dated Sept 11, 1854 states that a $5000 bond was given in and for the children of Thomas Bodine: John Bodine..age 20 years in Oct. (Mary & John were both listed as 'insane' people in many other documents.

From the estate of Thomas Bodine, deceased to Henry Haine Jr. for mileage in attending as a witness in care of Thomas and Eliza Bodine in October 1852 in Hardin County, Ohio. So we know that this is indeed the Thomas and Eliza listed above from Wyandot Co., Ohio. (But why was she not in the 1850 census with Thomas?)
